ATV vs Side by side

Love my sxs, won't go back to a quad. Not much for trees in my country, mostly caragans hedges. Can haul daughter and myself and 2 dogs plus a lot of gear when fixing fence. Don't do much in the way of trail riding unless me and my GSP go for a run, with him running and me riding.

Another point to consider is a deep water crossing, atv I can put my legs up and keep going, sxs and I need to keep my legs on the floor as the water rushes in and fills up the cab. Where I hunt, water crossing is a constant regular occurence, unless I was wearing waders, I’d be much wetter in a sxs.

Went through this process when I initially bought my 550 sportsman two up about ten years ago. Went with the ATV because figured there were trails I could not access with the SXS. Last year we purchased a 570 Ranger midsize SxS. No longer use the ATV. That sxs is just too handy. The epiphany (put over 700 miles on last hunting season) last season was at some time in October it became just plain miserable, at this point, Lucy and I were sitting under cover in the SxS pretty comfortable and watching it sleet outside. No sleet running down my back. As far as fuel consumption, not much. Spent three hours tooling around yesterday and did not come off the full mark. The Boss likes it and is far more willing to come along, she never really took to the back seat on the ATV, not that I blame her. So unless you will be restricted by narrow trails go sxs,at least from my perspective.

i did a run with a buddy in his RZR and me on ATV.

I was in shorts and running shoes. I finished the ride 99% dry.
He had on long pants a wet arse the entire night.

Had the Zewk and the quad.
Zewk was good as I could leave from home and do some circle lewps.
Quad I always had to come back to the truck.
Bawt a Rhino and while being an African Kritter is sure din't like mushkeg.
Mewv'd me arse up'ear and things are snowmobile wide and hated the snow
awn me lap.
Sold the African Kritter and bawt a bigger North'merikan Kritter.
This Grizz is les gattoes jammies.
While the Zewk won't go where the Rhino did, the Grizz out classes them all.
And I tend to stay way warmer on the ATV as well.

Hey Looky, ya shore kin pose dem pics nowadays kintcha!

Honda Pioneer 1000.. it's the way to go when hunting. You can beat the reliability etc. We park the truck. I drive the SxS in the bush about 100km and bring everything I need. Just love them.

Hmm noticing a geographic theme here.

Three peace country rednecks praising side by sides to guys from ontario lol.

I have a Polaris 570 sportsman and absolutly love it.
We do all mountain trails in southern Alberta and I have never had issues.
Put on some grippy tires and runner...

I already tow a travel trailer when going to the mountains so I don't have room for a side x side.
Not to knock them though... Last time we went out a guy gave me a ride in his 1000 Turbo RZR and holy #### it was fast!

another consideration,in my case, old man hands, shot knees and thankfully not in my case,a bad back.as you age,you may end up in a sxs.if not,and you can handle an atv all day long ,you're one of the lucky ones.i never thought it would happen to me either.

that's why I bought a Yamaha grizzly. While I can't ride it for miles and miles all day, I have hypermobile sacroiliac joints and stenosis in my lowest vertebrae.... among other issues in there.
The suspension on the grizzly is a real nice comfort feature.
I probably use my quad more for ice fishing than anything else and it is darn handy for that and lighter than a sxs , which is a plus on the ice. I can't really operate a snowmobile properly with my physical condition so the quad is real nice and a whole lotta fun on the flat ice surface when you wanna play around a bit.
If I lived in the peace country or in any of the middle provinces with all that open country I would probably want a sxs too ….. more for the offroad g0-kart aspect of it. hehehe

Has anyone in B.C. made a SxS street legal for recreation??
I know in Utah ..Nutnfancy is running on the roads in a Polaris
vineyard and private snow clear guys run on the roads
And city guys do also

i'm in the south cariboo/lower mainland.i've owned dirtbikes, quads and a dunebuggy.after 40 years of driving them,i can rip in my sxs. i also prefer to ride alone as opposed to a group.my pace,my trail choices,i can stop where i want and target shoot, no waiting for slowpokes and best of all not eating someone else's dust.sxs's will never pass the safety issues as long as icbc has the monopoly.up here in the cariboo as well as the chilcotin, the off road trails often parallel the main roads all over the place.i can leave my driveway and head 10 k up to the gas station, pub, grocery store, without hardly hitting a road, except for the occasional crossing, which if done 90 deg, to the road,is legal.i take the sxs up more often than the truck because it's a freakin' blast.i can get some pretty good air when i'm crossing some of the driveways.if you google earth lone butte horse lake road you'll see what i mean.gub, all the cfmoto sxs's come factory with turn signals, bumpers, horn.doors and roof.as street legal as you can get.

ya that's a nice thing about many places in the cariboo. I can leave my driveway on the grizz , cross the road and I'm on a legal trail that parallels the road for kilometers and has many adjoining routes to snowmobile/atv trails and FSR roads.

Anywhere I hunt in Ontario I can ride my SxS on the roads, including around our township. Must be plated and insured. Also, no problem riding any trails, as the 570 is only a couple inches wider than my sportsman.

It always depends on what you want.

I'm not interested in sporty stuff, I like utilitarian. I don't care about quadding into tight spots or "sport" applications. Mostly use my side by side for logging roads, spur roads, deactivated roads and chores around the property, like firewood and snow plowing. I can get my sxs anywhere I would personally go with a ATV and in hunting season you are often moving in the very dark and cold mornings and evenings. Nice to have a heater and cab in those cases. Set up like I have it, my SXS cost about the same as a new pickup truck but it will likely last me for decades.

Bench seat in the front, two pop up seats in the back, and a dump cargo rear makes it a pretty versatile workhorse and fun machine.

Was out hunting yesterday....it poured rain...it snowed wet rabbit skins...it blew 30.

No way I would want to spend the day exposed .... quite happy to have a sxs.
