ATV vs Side by side

really there are no wrong choices , get what suits your needs and you are comfortable riding/driving.

Myself, I want a dedicated machine to play around in during the winter months and I can't operate a snowmobile due to my broken body and the quad is only so much fun on icy snowy terrain until you damn near kill yourself LOL

A guy in Russia I have conversed with a few times on an ice racing forum built a hybrid ice racer by scaling up an RC tracked vehicle (remote control toy)
It's a single seater using a 4 wheel drive atv running gear that has been highly customized. Has ATV tracks as well.
Not allowed to post video due to copywrite stuff but he did send me the technical sheet on how to build my own.

Having both, the SXS is more leisurely and the quad is a little more aggressive. Although, the sxs soaks up bumps on roads better, the quad allows me to bail when #### gets hairy. I will keep both because they serve different purposes for me.

another consideration,in my case, old man hands, shot knees and thankfully not in my case,a bad back.as you age,you may end up in a sxs.if not,and you can handle an atv all day long ,you're one of the lucky ones.i never thought it would happen to me either.

One of my machines is an old Big Red 3 wheeler, and those being "hard tail" have no rear shock. I'd say it's less hard on your back being able to soak up the bumps by letting your legs work a little. With a quad and good shocks and springs all the way around it's even easier. With a sxs, mini ute, or truck, you're forced to take the shock the suspension doesn't soak up with your back.

I install my Camoplast tracks on my ATV this week. I can go through cutblocks with ease, and places snow machines cannot. However it is not exactly a speed machine when tracked, but it does get me out there, which is the name of the game.

I'm trying to get a few of my friends to get into ice racing in the winter time on the frozen lakes.... which around here are many. Our lake is something like 11km long so rippin around in a 4wheel drive high speed tracked machine is very high on my "must do" list hehehe

Sooo then, yer browk'in bawd isn't qwite awl browk'in yet?...…………...

My side by side is an 8 wheel Argo and I also have a Polaris 4x4 quad. I would not want to part with either as I use them both for there specific abilities. So as has been said here a few times you must figure out what you want a machine to do and then get something that can fill your needs to your liking.

walking is becoming a challenge.....
changing the brakes on my 91 dodge cummins laid me up for two days.
Can't hunt solo anymore...…
but I'm gonna build me an ice racing machine before I'm totally crippled even if it kills me LOL

my back yard has just shy or 100 ft. or water frontage on a 17km long lake,it's 1 km wide at my yard to the far shore,i can hardly wait for it to freeze.i put my tracks on already.

We do that up here between fishing spots in our 4X4 pickups. ;) Not really, but we do use our pickups on the ice.

I'm sure you can find a few guys to climb aboard your ice racing train. Where are you located?

i'm just outside of 100 mile house bc
I use my grizzly 550 lots during ice fishing season and it is fun but have a desire for something 'more' while keeping it light, low and fast

A decent used quad is $3000 to $5000
A used side by side is $10k+. They don't offer a value to me that's worth that premium.

I bought this Can Am Defender in 2016. It was a beast but too wide for a lot of the trails I rode. In hindsight should have went with something more narrow or another ATV. Sold it but looking for a beater to use on our property.

that statement makes no sense whatsoever.it's the same as "that racetrack must not be fun if you can drive your truck on it"."or "that hiking trail must be no fun if you can ride your mountain bike on it."

Actually, it's nothing at all like your comparisons. What I am saying is the machine you have is so long, wide, tall and heavy that it's physically impossible to ride it on the good trails (aka fun trails) that we have around here. A serious drawback to choosing such a large machine over an ATV.

Therefore, you guys must have some wide open trails and forests with minimal mud and swamp land if you can take that pioneer anywhere an ATV can go.
