Type 81 fixed vs folding stock?

Hi!

I'm set on buying on Type 81 today and I can't decide between a folder or a fixed stock and definitely don't have the money for both hahahah.

I was wondering if anyone knows if I'd be able to convert a folding stock to a fixed stock at some point down the road if I decide I don't want the folder anymore. I like the idea of a folding stock gun but don't really NEED one. I've read that the fixed stock is a lot more comfy to shoot with and I'll be primarily range plinking with it.

I've looked at the images and can see the setup is very different and believe that any changes would need to be customized but just trying to get a general idea of the . "doability" in the first place :)

Also would love to hear about any of your experiences shooting either and which you prefer.

Id suggest a fixed... its more diverse (it can easily be switched). And u have a smaller chance of receiving a rifle with a bent trunnion.

Im not sure if id agree with the notion that the fixed is more comfy to shoot. That fixed stock was definitely shaped for 5ft Cambodian.

Ok, noted! I'm gonna go check them out now. I'm pretty small, so that may actually be better for me hahah
 
I'd suggest if your decision is based on cosmetics then your own subjective impressions should override the impressions of others. If your concern is ergonomics then you need to handle both. If you have a, relative to a North American 10 year old, big head then wood stock likely won't be as comfortable. If your concern is about which will maintain higher resale value then I'd look at which is most rare while factoring in a subjective weighting of the of two factors.

That said, wood stock is cooler looking for some but then again the folder, when half folded, can easily balance the rifle upright on it's magazine for photos or display purposes and that is pretty cool in and of itself. The fixed stocks length of pull is about 1/4 inch longer than the folder so you might want to factor that into your decision making process as well.

Id like to say i chose the folder cus its more inline with what the PLA are/were issued.... but my rifle is FAR from stock now, and that was always my plan, so now i really dont know why i chose a folder. What i do know is that its a super comfortable shooter, and i love the look of it.

Ive owned it for 3 years now ? And have maybe folded it 12 times haha.
 
Have had both fixed and side folders, the side folder is way more comfortable to shoot due to the comb and cheek weld hands down. Not to mention nice to have a folder for smaller cases, when slinged, and in a vehicle.

Damn... I bought the fixed but now I have buyer's regret already and I haven't even taken it out of the box! haha

I have regrets now... damn. Went with the fixed but already regret my decision. Ugh.

Appreciate the insight and I wish I had checked into this post again before walking into the store. Oh well, maybe I'll have to just end up buying a folder when I have spare cash in month or so (provided they still have stock)

I wouldnt worry much, its honestly a toss up between the two, hence why the discussion is brought up in this forum all the time. Take it to the range, ull probably be pleased with it unless u were looking for decent accuracy.


Mounting a scope to the gun was an ordeal the way i did it. Plus it was pricy. But the system is proving to be very robust and it does greatly improve the "shootability" of the gun!
 
Get both of you can. They both feel very different. I am going to get the folder as well and put the rail on it. Tacticool vs. Classic
