I picked up a couple boxes of 3” magnum CIL Imperial’s at a local garage sale two years back, #4,5,6’s. I always have a couple on me while walking trails looking for grouse and hares, I use them primarily for hares but I’ll tell you what. When you see a grouse on the trail further out than a 2 3/4” #7.5 will drop em, that 3” #5 or 6 dummies them every time. They pack a great kick and make a hell of a noise, love em!

What's the payload on the 3"? 1 1/4oz at 1400fps ish?

And you forgot to mention that smell , Ooh that smell , can't you smell , Ooh that smell.
Oh waits thats a song and I digress.
Those shells do make a big boom , makes some smoke and have a distinct smell and best of all they can be had for cheap and kill game if one does their part.

Yes yes, the smell brings me back in time to when I was a youngster. Such great 12g loads, wish I had been able to buy more at that yard sale, iirc I paid $10-12 for all four full boxes.
 
I was thinking that's a lot of shot, but I guess that's what you get when you can stuff lead in there (all my 3" shells are steel shot, so they're only 1 1/8th and 1 1/4oz)
