Model 7 - small mag box

I have a Rem Model 7 Predator in 204 Ruger. Just had it out to the range with my first set of reloads and seem to have a mag box issue.

Loaded up some 32gr VMAX bullets which fit in the mag box fine. With the 40gr VMAX bullets, seated 0.025 off the lands, the loaded cartridges
are too long for the mag box.

I noticed that inside the mag box (at the rear of the follower), there is a small metal spacer. I'd have plenty of room for any bullets I'd want
to seat if that was removed.

The issue is: if I remove the spacer, the follower will not fit the mag box correctly.

Has anyone dealt with this in the past? I"m thinking maybe a follower out of something else (SA Rem 700 maybe) would fit with the spacer removed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
A few Model 700's and model 70's I have work fine with an original follower and the mag box opened up. You can bend the mag spring so the rear of the follower rides the back of the mag box as well.
Think of it no differently as using a Wyatt box and the existing follower.
If not, remove the original mag spacer and replace it with another that is smaller but suits your oal.. You will need to adjust the bolt stop as well.
 
Interesting. I don't have a .204 Mod 7, or any experience with them, but I do have a Mod 7 in 7mm 08. The OAL for the Mod 7 in all the ones I've owned is the same as for the 700 - mag length isn't where they shave the action length off, and obviously not if it's the a mag box with a spacer in it as you have.

I'm heading overseas shortly for a year or so, so I could lend my mag box and follower if you want to play around with them and see if it works before ordering the parts. On the other hand, for the even the cost of postage I'd be inclined to roll the dice and buy a take off 700 mag box and follower on the EE, given those parts should cost slightly more than a six pack of cat washing beer.

I'm just funning ya... absolutely, if you can get the same results seated to mag OAL, problem solved. If you get better results seated to longer than mag OAL, modify the rifle. I'll agree that jump and consistency aren't NECESSARILY related, but IME with some bullets they most definitely are. Not to mention the other advantages of seating long - admittedly though they're pretty minimal with a 40 grain .204...

Not really enough info in the OP to provide a meaningful answer.
