Hey guys. Sure this has been up before but help me out. So is this course worth it ? Or only if going into IPSC ? What is that even ? Handgun only competition ? Getting my foot into the door with 3 Gun , pretty excited , so exploring other options. How much is this 2 day course ? Any set up in 1 day ?

Thanks for the help again people, in advance

My take is that you might regret signing up for it if you never intend to shoot a IPSC match, just because a lot of time is spent on specific IPSC rules. Overall though it is definitely useful and will help with 3gun.

I would recommend partaking in some IPSC matches in your area. They are good clean fun with a gun, better organized and ran than any other shooting event. And it is a great environment to watch and learn from some extremely talented shooters.

Except for a few guys who were disqualified, and left mad, I've never heard of anyone regretting taking the Black Badge.

Speaking for myself, taking the Black Badge was probably the best decision I've ever made.

Highly recommend IPSC. Standing on a line shooting at a fixed target gets boring fast. IPSC is a great way to get outdoors, always well organized, and will improve your shooting skills immeasurably. Highly recommended. Seriously, I'd question why bother getting a handgun at all if you don't do some sort of shooting sport.

Go for it!

I had shot a lot of idpa and 3 gun before taking the BB. In my case, it was not worth it....but it’s a requirement if you think you’ll sign up for a BB match.

It is a good course if you’re experience to action shooting is limited...at least IMO

I am sure BB is the pre-requisite for any IPSC matches. He won’t be able to participate without the course.

Hmmmm. Well looks like I'll be partaking. How much does it cost besides ammo ? Wonder if it will be inthe budget this spring though

Make sure you are well prepared before the course. You should be familiar with your gun and holster, as well as shooting accurate enough. The course will focus on your speed and different shooting position. It is a challenging course and people can fail or get kicked out. 2 failed on my course of 10 within the first day.

Is there an annual fee or qualification to maintain your black badge?

Yes. It’s about $75 a year and IMO well worth it. You need to shoot at least one match a year to maintain your BB.

I found it to be a very good course and well worth it. And it opened up a ton of IPSC Handgun, Shotgun and rifle match opportunities I would otherwise not have had access to. Just not enough 3 Gun matches here in Ontario, especially this year, so IPSC fills the void for me.

The Black Badge instructors in Alberta are top notch. The course is about $300 plus ammo and travel. It will likely involve a mini-match as a practical application of those skills in a match setting.

The course does speak to competition rules, but those rules (other than scoring) are the common sense safe gun handling skills everybody should instinctively have. What better way to train them than in a setting with some other like minded folks?

Thanks Redruns .... 300 is much better than 500 , I was fearing

75 a year renewal seems silly to me. Plus kinda the whole thing. Been drawing loaded handguns out of holsters now for like 13 years .....

But will probably seek out and acquire my BB

Roger that bud. Yup I'm pretty proficient. Maybe not on different shooting positions however.
One handed reloads , one handing pistol - both , quick draw , my fav Mozambique, check. Biggest thing prolly is not have an attitude

I’m in about the same boat as you. I’m joining a new club and looking for a new discipline to get to know the members and build some contacts in the new club. I’ll be attending a BB course over the winter. This is an excerpt from an email I got from the instructor. You may find it useful.

“These are the minimum requirements to participate in the course:

• Minimum of 1500 rounds fired with the pistol you are using for the course
• Must be able to consistently hit a paper dinner plate at 15 meters using both hands
• Must be able to consistently hit a paper dinner plate at 10 meters using strong hand only
• Must be able to consistently hit a paper dinner plate at 7 meters using weak hand only

Please note that these are minimum accuracy requirements. If you cannot meet these requirements, you will not be able to complete the required exercises in the course.

If you are shooting a double action /single action pistol such as a CZ Shadow, Beretta, Tanfoglio Stock 2/3, Sig P226 etc., you are required to fire your first shot in double action. All of the above accuracy requirements must be completed in double action for the first shot and then single action thereafter.

Equipment you will require for the course:

• Functional & reliable pistol (9mm or larger caliber) that fits the requirements of one of the divisions in IPSC (see: http://www.ipsc.org/rules/divlistP.php)
• 5 magazines (if you have more even better) and tools/cleaning gear for your mags
• A proper gun belt (2 piece Velcro) like DoubleTap, CR Speed or DAA.
• Minimum of 4 magazine pouches (Ghost and Black Scorpion pouches are an excellent option - try to avoid double mag pouches)
• A competition type belt holster, like Blade Tech DOH or Ghost Stinger. A race holster like CR Speed WSM or DAA Race Master is also good options. Button activated holsters are not permitted and you will not be able to participate in the course with a button activated holster.

• 800 rounds of ammunition
• Appropriate clothing for temperature and conditions
• Water/Gatorade
• Pants or shorts with minimum of 3 belt loops (requirement for IPSC competition)
• Safety glasses & hearing protection”

^ crazy .....

Thank you

I Ordered the belt from Wild West the other day ..... they didn't have Ernie hill in black so ordered the AA style one - he said was slightly better than EH

No idea about Velcro or buttons yet will figure out soon. I've got the 1911 45 and a glock 9mm so those are single / double I think

I have one CR secure double mag hard holster , I held off ordering more till the 3 gun guys help me out , was gonna chest rig it in the time being , but ya that's not ipsc or bb

The $75 is your annual IPSC Membership fee, not to maintain your Black Badge. The entire Black Badge course is designed around teaching you to compete safely in IPSC, not teach you to shoot, so unless you are wanting to compete in IPSC I'm not sure it will return the value you are seeking.

Even if you do not plan to shoot IPSC, it is a nice qualification to have if you are shooting any organized 2 or 3 gun competitions. It is IPSC rule heavy which is good if you are going into IPSC, but also goes through allot of techniques and movements beneficial to most competition shooting. Probably the cheapest of any pistol/holster/drawing/shooting/movement course available.

It is 2 days of action shooting that most don't have opportunity to try otherwise. If you like shooting it is a fun weekend and worth the cost IMO.
