I'm researching rifles that would be suitable for hunting and exploring in the yukon or NWT. I plan on moving there. I have a Bergara hmr for long range hunting, but it's a bit heavy for hiking all day. Are the new Marlins good again? Or something like the steyr scout or compact?
Thank you in advance

For the in tight stuff, here is my take on it. Only 50 rounds so sar but accuracy and function are top notch, I’m quite fond of that 2.75 Burris and being able to keep both eyes open.... I’ve since replaced the rings with some Warne Maxima QD’s.

Northern bush gun. Here's my solutions.
I live in northern alberta so not quite the Yukon, but for the most part we deal with the same gave species. We have Elk instead of caribou.
Marlin 1895 fitted with skinner guide sights ( front post and rear peep)
Marlin 336 30-30 fitted with skinner low profile peep and williams firesight front bead
Mk4 no1 303 brit, barrel chopped to 18.75" new front ramp installed for use of original peeps. Also have a quick detached scope mount with a 1-5 illuminated reticle scope.
If big bears are not as much a concern I would seriously look at the mares leg in 44mag with full stock

Sorry, but I dislike most of the answers so far.

Assuming this is for hunting and not carrying while surveying or camping, just get a boring old 30-06 in a bolt action that fits you. My preference is Tikka's and Brownings but brand preference is like ice cream preference on this forum. Or see what the locals shoot (same thing)

Look on youtube the channel of North 61.
He lives in yukon and is a gunnutz. He tried almost every caliber and action in his search.
He has a Winchester 375 mod.94 ,worth the look.
Anyway check him out and see what he used and why. I think that he might be a member here.

Love but don't have a 375 Winchester. If I could get one in SS it would be close to the top in my list. For me anything stainless 20" barrel or less, 2500+ foot lbs energy.

Get whatever turns your crank. Honestly. I was born in Central Yukon in the 70's :) and have lived and hunted here ever since. I pack and hunt with what-ever happens to be my current fling. Moose rifles over the years chambered in .270, 7x57, .308, 7mm, and last years from my 1899 .303 savage. All my dads moose, black, and grizzly bears were taken with his surplus .303 brit. I work a lot in the bush and have had about a dozen 'bear encounters'. None of which ended up in a dead bear (or me). For a few years I packed an 1894 Marlin in .44 mag. My current packing/bear rifle is a neat sporterized Enfield. I like to pack something short and light (Husqvarna 4000/4100 is a favorite). I took a fully wooded Enfield sheep hunting once (Canadian Ranger issue) and never again! But thats just my thing. Some guys seem to like packing something north of 8 lbs but not me.

The Savage 1899 was a very popular rifle in the Yukon in the days of the goldrush. I am real happy carrying mine around. It has a super slick, reliable action and is a joy to carry in the hand. Besides it looks real nice leaning in the corner of the cabin. But if Kel Tek RFD is your thing theres nothing wrong with that!

Have fun shopping.

This Model has the Factory Muzzle BRAKE with it - Reduces the RECOIL to like a Light loaded 243 Win at most ! You can remove it and just cap the barrel if you like too !

Not a Yukon guy but a “ northerner “ by some definitions

Lightweight synthetic with stainless steel and a 3-9x40 in the intermediate caliber of your choosing is what I seem to grab always these days even though I have tons of “ Bush gun” heavies in the safe.

Since you already have a long range hunting rifle, what about a CZ 527 carbine?

Low weight (6lbs), excellent adjustable "set trigger" (~2lbs), 18.5" barrel, excellent factory iron sights, points and handles very nicely...classic CZ quality.

Lots of ammo choices. Cheap plinking stuff, and commercial hunting loads commonly available up to 150gr. At 2200fps,a 150gr bullet does a lot of damage.

You say you already have a long range rifle.

This 7.62x39mm load at 50 yards will do exactly the same job as a 30-06 at 225yds. It performs better than a 170gr .30-30 at 100yds.

Not sure what you're into, but some handloaders have even played around with 170gr 7.62x39mm loads, with good results.

Very interesting thought, I do have a VZ58 that I am fond of, just figured that it would be underpowered for moose.
