Action opinions?

There is a few things that can be done to Rem 700 action. That being said I think that a complete blueprinting including oversizing the threads is overrated.

Refacing the front of the receiver on a mandrel where it contact the Recoil lug and lapping the locking lug is about as much as you should do to a Rem 700. Anything else to me just weakens the receiver.

If you want to get into precision/long range shooting then I would buy a very high quality barrel and have it installed by a reputable gunsmith. This should be enough to get you going. If you are already looking to get to the next level then custom action it is!

Your looking at around $6-700 for blue printing, another $5-600 to get the barrel spun on. Then its the small details, muzzle threaded, bedding etc.

Sell you remington, use the money towards a precision action, you ll be ahead in the long run. Consider the "remage" setup, having a barrel nut and go/no-go gauges will cut out much of the cost of fitting a barrel to the action.

Whats you prices? Dont be shy, I'm alright with being wrong, just wanting to know how/why. I was half remember-guessing from ATR

Personally I would rather pay a little more for the assurance of having a competent gunsmith produce a quality product for me, rather then rolling the dice and hoping I don't get a "Friday job".

I have a few friends that have spent a lot of time, money and frustration trying to go the cheap and local route for gunsmithing - it's a lot more expensive in the long run if you have to get it sent to another gunsmith to get fixed. Happens a lot more then it should.

But I'm picky. There's probably only about ~10 or so gunsmiths in the entire continent I would have touching my rifles.

First: I’m far from shy, mate! Fact is: I’ve just got too many years under the belt to give out exact ‘greenhorn’ quotes like that as every project or brand is different with too many variables: impossible and irresponsible to quote exactly up front without seeing & checking over the actual project! However: your quote would scare a good amount of my customers away in my neck if the woods, lol 😂! I know in this day & age we gunmakers (yes, there is a difference between gunmakers & gunsmths) should be at least on a $120.-/hr rate, the same as most mechanic shops, while any engineering outfit with similar equipment as us is already at $400.-/hr, but we just can’t as the market is not there and are still stuck at $60.-/hr, so what I can tell you is that you’re on everage 1/3 or more over the actual quotes! Just my two cents of advice! QUOTE=cody c;16390560]Whats you prices? Dont be shy, I'm alright with being wrong, just wanting to know how/why. I was half remember-guessing from ATR[/QUOTE]
