I hear this expression alot, is there such a thing.??
I know there is "underkill" with cartridges not designed for big game, but I have never "overkilled" a moose using an appropriate caliber.

Overkill

I once used a 30-30 on a rabbit while bear hunting. 20 feet away. Eyeball in the sight. Unfortunately it moved.

Yes a 30-30 at 20 feet is OVERKILL on a rabbit!
There is such a thing.
Anytime you can compare it to using a sledge hammer to kill a fly its overkill

"Overkill" is a pretty common term used well beyond the hunting fraternity, but I guess since we actually do kill animals some may question it's factuality.

I suspect if you kill something so badly that it can not, haunt, zombie or release it's soul to heaven I guess that would be overkill. Myself, I just tend to overcook stuff.

how about 10 feet?:D:D:D:D:D blew the whole front end off of it including the head...
I learned the hard way that a centrefire 30-30 in the body of a rabbit ruins more meat than you can salvage...

I don't know if there is such a thing as overkill in calibers, though there is in drilling mud weight. The portion of weight that is over "kill weight" is overkill.
What you do see is shooters that are overgunned and others that are undergunned. Normally it is easy to spot the undergunned shooters, they're the ones talking about "overkill"

Overkill is a slang term for the use of excessive force that seems to go much further than necessary to achieve its goal. For example, shooting an ant with a rocket launcher would be overkill.

Over Kill, = safety factor.
Over kill is a good thing, ensuring the end result is achieved.

I dont think Overkill has a place in the shooting or hunting sports!
Some with argue some will snear, some will turn there noise up at it saying why is it needed!

I have seen more damage done by smaller damage calibers at faster velocity than Large bore rifles.

Not getting into a pissing contest whats better, I like both! I use both.

.444 marlin crow shooting.... if not for a patch of feather's on the ground that look like a hand grenade went off inside a pillow you wouldent know you even hit it....

Dead is Dead. Doesn't matter what you use to accomplish that end. If one feels that the 458 Win is about right for deer, I say have at it. The only thing I dislike is having someone look me in the eye and try to tell me I have to have a _________ {insert some shoulder fired cannon here} to kill a moose, elk, deer, etc. REgards, Eagleye.

I actually think there is overkill in hunting situations. My definition is basically if the firearm, or load, used to kill the animal predictibly results in an unnaceptable loss of meat or hide, that's overkill. The guy who shoots a coyote with his 375 H&H with a 300 grain silvertip - overkill, or the guy who shoots a grouse with a 12 guage 3" magnum #2 shot - overkill. It's kind of cool to act like there's no such thing as overkill, but when you see an animal wasted, you know there is such a thing as overkill.
