HK 416 Demo

I have the pics and Videos of the Demo today will have them up tomorrow, The 416 has some interesting features and was impressed the overall construction and finish of the HK 416 are impressive to say the least the only two thing's that I could find fault with the 416 are the pistol grip which for some ungodly reason is even more uncomfortable than the A2 grip .The other is the forearm did not lock solid to the rifle and allowed the rail system to have some movement side to side. But more tomorrow

I'm most impressed with the mags. All steel and very smooth followers. They appear to be the best M16 Mags that I have ever seen or used. They are heavy being all steel but load and function great.

They are not as reliable as USGI mags with magpul followers. I no longer carry my HK mags.

OK, I can't stand this thread without any pictures, so I'm adding my own.

14.5" we received for testing a couple months ago, new came without a sight so an Eotech went on.
I didn't get a ton of rounds down range so it was hard to make any judgements as to pros or cons. Just felt like a C8.

And here it is ready to test.

Someone explain it..I dont get the hype..what does this thing offer other than exclusivity? Im a huge HK fan and like the idea of a piston..but say LMT ends up making a Piston.. What makes HK better? Also with their piss poor screw civilian sales attitude and poor parts service up here.. why would you want it?

KevinB... LMT or HK? Which would you prefer?

I got my LMT because of your advice and have been pretty happy with it.

They are tested and fielded in number. You cannot say the same for LWRC or POF, or some other ten men operations. The HK416 had actually gone through real trials.

Yeah but is there really an advantage? SHould we even support HK anymore anyways?

I'm on the record as saying "WE DONT NEED NO STINKING PISTONS"...

That said hypothtically if I had a Hk416 or two...
I'd be happy with them ;)

I'm interested in LMT's offering as beside Colt, and Hk - they are the only large company doing a piston. I dont consider LWRC or POF particularily viable yet -- I'd like a LWRC upper - but no one has them.

Here's a pic of a couple gats I played with almost a year ago in New Mexico.
As per Kevin's note, the 308 does have the larger butt, with the 416 having just the normal stock.
I gotta learn to get the foot out of the pictures.
Still waiting for Rich's pics.

I'm still of the opinion, so far, that with the piston, all that is being "gained" is trading cleaning the bolt/action for cleaning the piston and gas block.

Is it 6 of one, half dozen of the other? Maybe, I haven't cleaned a lot of piston rifles other than my 3 months in Cornwallis in '78.

So is there a lot lost or gained? Maybe not...

If I may wade into the fray and say that I agree with Kevin on the gas piston
and it's alleged advantages, but I do currently have a complete POF carbine and it has been running flawlessly & strangely enough so have my other rifles by LMT etc etc. I can spoke on the subject of the POF carbine and say that it has run without any issues what soever, I recently ran the gun at Sharon with two witnesses and they will tell you it functioned flawlessly with everything I feed it, this included both domestic and forgein FMJ in various bullet weights, frangible from 4 different companies, and an assortment of commercial loadings from 40 grain all the way to 77gr match, even some of my precious MagSafe & Glaser run like a charm, that aside it was clean and flawless and running a Endine buffer made it smooth all the way.

As you said the advantage is a clean rifle with the gas piston, so are we just trying to replace proper cleaning with more gadgetry - oh god I do love gadgets though:p

Two questions:

What kind of advantage are you looking for?

What have HK done not to deserve our support?

Well HK wont sell alot of thier product anymore to civilians. Plus in Canada HK uses FN sports which means that parts are hard to non exhistent unless your police or military. I realize its a distributor but when you contact HK direct they dont really care.

I find it hard to get excited about a rifle that in all likehood most of us will never be able to buy in Canada, soley based on the manufacturer not wanting to sell it...

I hope LMT comes out with a piston refit for my MRP..
