Mini 14 - the good the bad and the ugly

Get a newer Ranch model (serial 561 and later) and the accuracy will be acceptable out of the box. The only drawback I can honestly think of with these rifles is the cost and availability of 20rd magazines. The magazines are inexplicably expensive and very hard to find. There are no good reliable alternatives to the factory Ruger 20rd magazines either.

Is it going to be up to each Province to institute it? I was thinking of calling some coyotes this winter and I sold my .223 bolt gun. Always wanted to try a Mini 14.

If I was going after coyotes i would use something a little more accurate, unless you are inside 100 yds for all your shots. My mini is a ton of fun but as mentioned not the most accurate gun around.

2" was about what mine did regardless of series. The older 18x took work and an Accustrut to get there, the newer 58x series were there pretty quick. I reckon they're fine for a 200yd yote iron with a fast follow up that can stand bouncing around in the tractor. The last one I had I put into a plastic stock with collapsible butt so my kids could shoot it. It was a good step up from .22 for them and my youngest daughter really enjoyed it.

Shot one back in the 80's, it wasn't very accurate, or maybe it was the ammo, the FMJ ammo that came in 50 round boxes would make a mess of a coyote if you could hit one.

Remember felling a cottonwood tree with a full capacity magazine.

I've considered getting one the last few years, but have never gotten round to it.

I really enjoy mine. Although I don't shoot it much. It's plenty accurate, about 2" at 100 like everyone else. It's light and handy. I use mine mostly as a truck gun just thrown across the backseat. They are definitely worth trying out. Just don't expect something that it is not.
