Looking for some recommondations

My Ruger 10/22 is a finicky little bugger. I'm starting to get a little tired of looking for something she really likes.

SO!

What have you guys found that gives good consistant groups,few jams and misfires.
 
I've tried about 8 different brands, The ruger seems to like some cheap bulk ammo like Remmenigton Gold Bullets but that stuff is dirty as hell.

Never heard of green tags, CCI mini mags were do you get them?
 
I think i went through about 10-12 different types of ammo for mine, turns out the first was the best CCI mimi-mags. Instead of polishing anything I decided to put through 2 bricks of stingers instead. Polished everything up nice IMHO and it was way more fun too. I've got an extractor but I haven't put it in yet.

Change the extractor on your 10/22 with a Volquartsen precision edge extractor from either Hark Tech Arms or Rimfire Sports and you will be able to feed it with any ammo and it won't jam or stovepipe at all. It was the best $11 I ever spent on my 10/22.

John, most ammo I give to my 10/22 I have few FTF's (fail to fires), or FTE (fail to eject).

If you find your are getting these then that could be that your barrel is too dirty. You want to make sure that the chamber remains relatively clean especially when using ammo with lots of wax on the bullets such as the target rounds.

If your barrel is too dirty you will likely have these problems, as well as possibly a drop in accuracy.

But to answer your question, I have found CCI mini-mags, CCI blazer, Federal 510 champion, and other rounds like that to work well in my 10/22.

CCI green tag is the higher end line of CCI that was put out as a target round. I guess they are allright but for the same money you can get another round from eley or Lapua that will work 90% of the time better.

CCI minimags can be found at most hunting/fishing stores. They are sold in a plastic box of 100 (usually around $6-$7 or so for the box of 100)
 
mines an ammo HOG- eats anything, everything- even that god awful black russian that's covered in cosmoline- but i've had it for a few years and got it 2nd hand to boot- that said, it's a constant diet of fed bulk packs and winchester dynapoints- not experts- i also contantly fire stuff others have prevously chambered and ftf'd
 
I was sighting in my 1022 yesterday. Had some Yellow Jackets and Stingers. The accuracy was terrible. Groups at 25m ranged from 1 to 6 inches. I was cursing Ruger. A gentleman who was also shooting that day let my try a few different types of ammo he had on hand. The CCI standard velocity rounds worked the best. 5 round groupings shrank from 6 inches to one raged hole. The change was dramatic, and I don't hate my rifle now.

2 people recommended stingers,, The manuals say NOT to use stingers as they have longer cases....SO if you guys use them and like them I guess I'll give them a try.


Changing the extractor----- Is that something I can do myself or do a have to send it to a gunsmith? I've already had a trigger job done , got a sweet 2-2.5 lb pull.

It doesn't jam all the time, depending on the ammo I can go thru 3 or 4 mags
then all of a sudden have 2 jams in a mag.
 
I shoot CCI Stingers in my 10/22 all the time. It also like the CCI Mini-mags and most ammo brands. The only type that has given it trouble are the Remington Yellow Jackets, probably because of the shape of the bullet.

If you are comfortable stripping down your 10/22 for cleaning, then you will have no problems swapping out the extractor. When you have the bolt out, you just push the plunger down to take the extractor off, replace the spring with the one supplied with your VQ extractor, put the plunger back on top, push it down and replace the VQ extractor on...done.
 
X2 on what Allstone said. I would add that you remove the extractor inside a large clear plastic bag, unless you really want to spend a crap load of time looking for the tiny spring.

Like I said,, I've gotten a trigger job done and it's between 2.0- 2.5 lbs
( i swear it bursts every once in awhile)

I'm going to put a Green Mountain target barrel on it, now I've heard that these have tight NM chambers SO YOUR advice on changing the exctractor is a great idea, wasn't planning to do it.

Also putting a hogue overmold stock and going to throw in a Harris bipod.


Hoping to get a tack driver out of this baby.
 
Al Simmons in Hamilton stocks a good supply of various .22 ammo's. And I have a simple tool you can borrow that makes changing the extractor a snap! (or not, as the case may be....no more launched springs!)
