Possible Damge to My Stag 10

Have you stripped your rifle, cleaned the chamber and inspected it?
See any damage in the neck area?
Does your 'smith have a borescope to examine the chamber?

Yes, I have cleaned it and had a look. I can't really tell if there is any damage. I am calling around to find a smith that has a bore scope.

I doubt if there has been any harm done to your rifle.
As mentioned, the problem was with the annealing of the case necks, resulting in the cracks. Nothing to do with headspace, pressure, etc.
Stop using that particular batch of cartridges.

Thanks. There is absolutely no chance of me ever using that batch of ammo again.

I shot probably 25 or so splti cases and there was no damage. Its definitely not a over pressure issue. If your worried get a smith to look at it but i would say your good. I went through and inspected the rest the shot it and there where no issues.

Thanks for the assurances. It's nice to hear from someone that has experienced the same issue.

In the last year. Lot #L308W4B

I think that is the part number for the 40 round UMC 150gr MC in 308 win. The lot # I think is found on one of the inside flaps.

Thank you for this thread, I went and checked my own umc 308win and have found 11 split necks out of 80. That's enough for me to not waste any more time going through the rest. Have shot 40 through my own Stag before I stumbled on this thread, inspected it and it looks fine.

C07MB30L is what the inside flap reads.

I will chim in with my two cents.

The stock stag10 barrel is chrome lined, and is very durable. Just take a look at the life expectancy 15000-17000 vs a stainless or Chrome Moly at 5000 -7000. Being chrome lined I seriously doubt and damage was done.

About the bullets getting pushed into the necks, there are many things that could do that. Firstly seeing how this batch of ammo is a known bad, I wouldn't be surprised if they were improperly crimped and the bullet got pushed into case inside your magazine when firing due to recoil. Secondly take a look at your feed ramps from he barrel extension. They should lined up with two small cutouts in the upper receiver. In the AR15 world they are called M4 feed ramps, and if they are not lined up properly can cause all types of bad things to happen. Thirdly, if you are worried about your chamber being "Cut" just take a ball point pen and run it gently through your chamber and see if get caught on any ridges or deformation. You are using the pen as a "feeler"

IMHO it's just bad ammo. Split necks cant hold bullets under tension, and will cause the bullet to get pushed into case under recoil inside the mag.

Ive had new recruits run their C7's literally full of sand and dirt, pumping hundreds off rounds threw the newly created "Sand blaster". If also seen ammo that was oiled and then covered with sand and dust, and then promptly run threw the guns as well. Never seen a bad chamber, and all these guns still hold around 1-2 MOA. All this was due to lack of experience of course.

Cheers,

Chris

I'm sorry about the confusion with the lot number. I later found out that the lot number was on the inside flap. Bingo!, that is the lot number that is on my boxes as well.
