Ontario CFO wait times.

It would be like watching paint dry.

OK, I just called up to follow up on two pending transfers (I am the buyer); one is 30 days right on, the other is a few days short of 30. "Not yet approved" and "Have not even in the quay".

Helpful answers.

I was just told , might be a few weeks because of hunting season even though I don’t see the correlation because u can’t hunt with restricted and u don’t transfer non restricteds so....

All the CFP folks are on vacation, out hunting. Believe it or not some of the drones that work in that office are actually gun owners.

They all seem to be dragging their heels lately. Tomorrow will be the start of week #3 waiting for an Alberta-Alberta transfer. Pretty ridiculous actually considering that transfers usually take 2 days here. Both of us have called like over a week ago to see what was up but they said they are “pretty busy”. Buyer has a valid range membership and everything as we both checked to make sure all the info was correct. Wonder if they are purposely dragging their heels.

Do you know where in the process you are? Makes a big difference if the file is at the Canadian FIrearms Program or at your provincial Chief Firearms Office.

I have a transfer from a dealer in it's sixth week. Is it possible they are simply refusing to process these waiting for November 20th?

How does one cancel a transfer?

Whats the significance of November 20th? Dec 6th is the 29th polytechnique grave dancing party, and the 30th anniversary of the polytechnique shooting. That's the day every thinks bad news is coming.

Cancelling a transfer can be initiated by either party by calling the CFP with your transfer reference number and telling them you want to cancel the transfer.

I wouldn't be surprised, pacing themselves in anticipation of C71 coming in to force.

Not so much pacing themselves, as working frantically to bring it online, which will cause a significant amount of added paper pushing.

One month so far.
Transfer from Ontario dealer to Ontario buyer.

Why is it possible to transfer a vehicle ownership in six seconds; but transferring a firearm takes six weeks?

Because the government has no say in who owns a vehicle, and they are simply processing a form by changing some data fields and hitting print, and is all managed by the same person.

Transferring a restricted firearm requires coordination and transmission of significantly more information between multiple people and offices, and requires a background check and case file review before being approved and sent off to another officer to be printed and mailed.

Look at it another way, ON probably has more transfers than the rest of the country put together.

Close. Ontario gun owners hold 40% of the restricted/prohibited firearms registrations. Alberta is 2nd with 20%. While Ontario has twice the number of registered firearms, and presumably twice the number of transfers, it also has 3.5x the population. What the province of Ontario also has is a chronically underfunded and short staffed CFOs office run by the provincial government, whereas Alberta's CFO services are managed by the Canadian Firearms Program.
