gotenda.com has a 1911 sale on right now and I`m wondering if anyone has had experience with Springfield 1911s. They any good. They seem comparable to Sig 1911s in price and features so should I expect the same quality

Also, for a cheap 1911 option is there is a Springfield Armory 1911 Defender Mil-Spec 45 ACP 5″ Black Parkerized 7+1 for $679. It only comes with one mag though. This a good deal for a basic 1911 (https://www.gotenda.com/shop/firearms/handguns/springfield-armory-1911-defender-mil-spec-45-acp-5-black-parkerized-71/)

Sorry my question mark button isn`t working right now so my questions appear as statements.

Springfields are good quality, I wouldn't hesitate to buy that one you listed. I'd buy it myself if I didn't already have the same one. My Mil Spec is the pistol I use the most, love it.

The $679 Springfield is about as old-school as you see in current production; it seems to want to go SASS Wild Bunch. Other guns have more of the features you'd expect in a current competition gun.

I don't have any experience with Springfield 1911's, but there's a fairly nice looking SAM 1911 in 45 acp on the ee right now for $425. It's got a beavertail grip safety added that looks like it needs to be blended to the frame, or put the original style one back in. My wife and I each have a SAM 1911, and they're both really nice guns for what they cost.

I have a Springfield Armory Loaded Stainless ca. 2005 production. It has MIM parts, but has what seems to be a match barrel, the slide-frame and barrel-slide fits are bank vault tight. In fact this piece is one of the best fitted 1911s I've ever seen. I bought this on a whim because the EE price was irresistible. Best part is it does 3 inch 5 shot groups at 15 meters, standing two handed shooting my own home cast Lee 230 grain Round Nose bullets over 4.8 grains Titegroup. Not impressive to some perhaps. But from an average shooter like me, that's phenomenal, IMO.

I've never had a Sig 1911.

I’ve heard really good things about Springfields, Sigs and then some price 1911s like Dan Wesson. I don’t need a competition gun. Just something for fun to shoot around and if it’s close to the originals I’d like that as well.

Unless its handmade, 1911's are meh for the money. Be better off with a polymer handgun.

Are you saying they are overpriced or just not fun to shoot? I have a Glock 34 that I normally shoot for fun. Just looking for a few more options to play around with. I like the history of the 1911 and shooting them is fun and they are accurate like no other.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Springfield, or a Colt. Been the ones making the 1911s the longest. I quite enjoy my Sprngfield 1911 MC Operator, that I got for a steal.

That Defender is priced lower than most used Springfields on the ee. Granted, most of the used ones currently up are higher end models. Even adding a couple more good mags to your purchase keeps it in the reasonable ballpark for price if you want a basic pistol. From what I can see the Defender is just a lower priced version of the regular Mil Spec, only one mag and plain grips vs 2 mags and logo grips.

I think I bought mine in '08, paid 600 bucks for it third-hand. Never had a problem that wasn't mag-related.

Springfield’s are one of the best in my opinion....upper end models have outstanding fit/function/features. The basic models are still the same basic parts with just less attention to detail and not as many options. The basic frame and slide are also a great foundation for custom builds....of course series 70 firing system keeps it all true to the original design....just the necessary stuff, no redesigned ‘improvements’

Not sure if this is relevant, seeing how a manufacturer's quality can vary a lot over the years, but I've had a Springfield Armory 1911 since 1991 and I haven't had any issues whatsoever with it. I'm not sure of the round count, but it's got to be close to 10,000 rounds.

A friend of mine purchased a new SA 9mm Range Operator in 9mm. Its a very nice 1911 until.....

Seems that SA cut corners on the ejector. Instead of the ejector being held in place on the frame with a pin as JMB designed, they freakin' eliminated the pin & "glued" it to the frame. Can you say jerks?
Of course the ejector legs worked their way out & locked up the slide to the frame.

Their warranty department did nothing. Eventually after much consternation & frustration, a hole was drilled in the frame & a pin was inserted to hold the ejector in place. Not Performance!

They have some very nice models that seem to cover a wide range of price points.

Older style 1911s with no beavertail, smaller sights and basic trigger (in this case plastic)... in my experience...may be more appreciated by the people with more experience with the platform. They typically have so,so trigger pull, they will bruise the top of your palm and they may bite you... depending on how are you handling them. In other words...you need to know what you are doing. For the first 1911 I would recommend a pistol with the modern features. Springfield is ok, but as mentioned before...they tend to cut many corners to make their pistols cheaper.

That guy is a newb who does not know JMB or its history....lol

Springer are good 1911 guns you cant go wrong but if your willing to spend a bit go for Dan Wesson ( check EE )

I have an older (2005 ish?) Springfield Mil-Spec and a Sig 1911 XO. First; The Springfield Armory Mil-Specs are about as basic as it gets for features; low GI sights, trigger is okay, and it has a GI grip safety. (It's angled downwards). The Sig 1911's have a beavertail grip safety, taller contrast sights, and a long style trigger that is slightly nicer. Both have been equally reliable, build quality is a bit better on the Sig. It's personal preference, but you may find the Mil-spec a little underwhelming. I didn't find the GI grip safety very comfortable compared to a beavertail style grip safety and I didn't shoot the gun well. I ended up putting a wilson combat sear and beavertail and now I prefer it over my Sig 1911. Something to think about anyway.

If you cannot sleep some nights, search the EE.. Never know what you'll find. Like I said, I found this Springfield, for 450 shipped. Used of course, but not much wear, and nothing wrong with it.
