Non Lead ammo for hunting.. am I mistaken?

Hi there.

I used to hunt every now and then when I was a kid,
I've been thinking of getting back into it.

I was thinking, and I like the idea of possibly using ammo that isn't soft point (FMJ instead), or even isnt lead at all (steel bullets, copper jacketed)

Is such a thing not a good idea or not allowed when hunting?

Are non-soft point bullets dramatically less effective than soft points?

Most hunting ammo has lead in them. Even FMJ have a lead core. Mind you I have a .50 cal bullet that has a steael core.

Your best bet is plastic tipped ammo.

FMJ's have a tendancy to pass thru and leave the animal wounded instead of dead

Some areas do not allow FMJs or monolithics

Most areas dont' allow bullets that dont' expand for hunting, for good reason- Non expanding bullets are unpredictable, and unreliable for quick, clean kills.

There are several non lead hunting bullets available, best known is the Barnes X bullets.
 
If you are concerned about lead, use an ALL COPPER, COMPLETELY LEAD FREE BULLET like the Barnes TSX.


Or, you can lso use the new Nosler e tip bullet, also a completley LEAD FREE bullet.

Teh TSX will be easiest to find for the next few years. It will get harder to find Winchester Fails Safes as they are being fazed out. But the Fail Safe stil has lead in it, unlike the other LEAD FREE BULLETS that are available.

Hijack Are they getting rid of them because the are producing the XP3 now??

Who loads the TSX???? Never mind. How did I miss that Federal is making ammo with them now? I thought they were just for reloading.

Am I missing something or have people been eating game shot with lead bullets for a couple of hundred years? Birds have been shot with lead pellets as long or longer, I'd hate to see tree hugging join in our sport. I'm sorry but, i think if we push for lead free bullets, the goodie two shoes will think it is a sign of weakness and try to ban all lead bullets and lead shot.
 
"...FMJ instead..." If you're thinking steel cored milsurp, forget it. It's illegal. Commercial fmj's are ok for hide hunting coyotes, but not deer or any other large game.
If you use the right bullet, it doesn't break up. In any case, any bits of lead should be in the innards, not the meat. Nothing to worry about.

You do know that elemental lead in it's metallic form is virtually non-toxic, right? And that any meat that's got fragments in it is garbage anyway due to being all bloodshot

California is moving to ban bullets that contain lead, very soon.
 
"...California is moving to..." California wants to ban everything. Arnie isn't any more firearm or hunter friendly than any other CA twit.
 
The part with lead.... is pure stupidity. We are bombarded with pollutants and stress every day, unhealthy food and bad tv..... Do we need to worry about a few grains of lead? They ban it because they (the govt.) create jobs for solving non existing problems and those "specialists" can't justify a salary unless they embrace a lost cause.... or they come up with solutions and are easily seen looking for a problem to their solution.

Not that the "no lead" is not feasible.... but what is the purpose?

You guys have to take those tinfoil hats off. This rediculous logic of it was ok for the last two hundred years crap has got to go; move into the new millenium By the same logic that im reading in here then we shouldnt have replaced CFCs or taken lead out of our fuel. Im sure these are as you say all examples of tree hugging commies.

If we can make ammunition that is 100% non-toxic we should lead the way without govt intervention and embrace it ourselves to show that we do care about the environment. Lets be leaders instead of followers. Leave lead at the range. Take copper, et al. into the field. We should put our money where our mouths are instead of whinning about change all the time. Get use to it, the world is changing and if we dont change with it we'll be gotten rid of easy enough. We are the minority.
