1858 Remington questions

I have an original Remington new army .44 percussion revolver. My question is, has anyone ever tried the uberti 45 colt conversion cylender in the original before? The uberti is the closest to the original so it may be a close match. Maybe I would have to replace the internals as well?
Any help appreciated.
 
I contacted taylors and company. They have an open house today and are really swamped. Their R&D department will call me back next week.
 
I suspect at best your still going to have some amount of fitting & timing to do. You do realize you put a 45 colt cylinder in that frame it becomes a restricted firearm? The strength of the frame & arbor would also have to be considered when developing a load.

Yea I understand the restricted change. I just would like to have the old girl up and running again. The original cylender is not suitable any more anyway. So I figured I could do some light cowboy loads in 45 colt just to plink at the range.

I had basically a parts 1858 gun. A very talented machinist fitted a new barrel and cylinder to it. It is one, if not the best looking antique firearm I own.

I put a 45 ACP in mine years ago needed a new hand for timing kept old to turn it back to original 45 acp cylinder keeps it in the antique class just load it with black and cast bullets also was able to use 455 hornady brass in mine too ordered the extra repro hand had to bend it slightly and adjust
 
Uberti conversion cylinders from Taylor's and Company in 45 Schofield were/are available. Several have been drop in fits into a few original guns. Give Tom a call at Taylors, and he'll help you out.

I thought I would add some info to this thread as I ha e been working on 1858 of my own. Long story short I ended up with an early 61 model with out the cut out around the barrel threads and the cylinder pin did not recess into the frame, the gun was a bot of a wreck and needed work. I was looking for a project to build into a ranch packer so this was perfect but I would of preferred a less rare model. The cylinder in this gun measured right at 2.00" but had almost .020 end play leading me to believe it is not the orginal cylinder. From research I have seen reference once on the internet that the orginal beals revolver had a different frame size but I can not back this up with any hard data other than the one I have in front of me that seems to support this. A friend of mine who is much more knowledgable has an orginal new model that he bought a pietta parts kit for to replace the worn internals of his gun with. The hand fit with minimal fitting bit the hammer and bolt stop where completely different, I have the bolt stop he tried to install in is gun an indeed the pivot hole is way off. Funny thing is both the hammer and bolt stop work fine in my early version bit the hand does not. It appears before the new model remington threaded the hand pivot screw into the hand and later models threaded it into the hammer much like the repos.
