I just traded for a Remington model in 223 yesterday and just love it!! The lightest rifle I have ever own and can put 5 rounds in a 1.25 hole at 100yds, on the hunt for a 7-08, 308 or 260 with compact barrel, any issues I should be looking for?
 
I like them as an action to build off of. But as they come from the factory not so much. Too short of a lop for me. And they weren't as accurate as I hoped.

This is a Kendall/McPhee build that I bought off the EE a few years ago.

No real issues, but a few things to check: the early ones had three holes instead of four making you use a 1-piece base. You can get the 4th hole added but that’s added cost. See if it has the j-lock, because that’s probably $100 to get rid of.


Another interesting thing about them, is many have the anti-bind rail slot cut in the bolt, but the only action I’ve seen with the rail is the xcr m7. (But I should note I haven’t handled a new m7 - perhaps the newest ones have the rail)

I have a model 7 laminate .223 on order that I’m waiting for. Going to pair it with a Leupold Vx3i 1.5-5x I bought for it, mounted on Leupold QD rings and bases. Should be a lite & fun rifle.
 
Bought my first one a few weeks ago from a member here. A stainless-synthetic in 260. Overall it seems like a nice rifle but it has its drawbacks. The factory stock leaves a lot to be desired. Mine will be changed in short order. And the barrel on my particular example is 22", not the advertised 20" you see listed on Remington's website. Not sure why it's like that but it's a factory barrel. Side by side with my Tikka t3x battue, the model 7 actually comes out an inch longer, despite the longer receiver length of the tikka. The bolt is smoother and the trigger better on the tikka as well.

I like the gun and the cartridge. It will be a keeper but is going to require some significant modifications, which will cost more than the rifle did, to become as good a rifle as I want it to be. If you're a guy who likes to try new things and build semi-custom guns, the model 7 is a good choice to work with and you'll likely enjoy it. If you're a guy who just wants to buy a good, solid feeling gun straight outtal the box, mount a scope and go, buy a tikka, howa or browning. You'll spend about the same amount of money and end up with a better rifle right from the get go.

The M7 is my preferred hunting gun, have a few, all older models. The Synthetic SS models have the 20" barrel and the CDL an 18.5" barrel. These are not range rifles, but darn good bush guns.

The one in the EE sure has one of my eyebrowze raised.
I'm waiting for nudder deal to not go thru otherwise I'd be sniff'in a wee bit more.

My 260 SS has the 22" barrel as well. Word is if they run short of 20" barrels during production. They substitute in the 22" barrels from the mountain rifle. But who knows if that's true.

Either way I have a few of them and like mine. Fluting the bolt. Skeletonizing the handle. A wildcat composite stock. Just switched out the scope I had for on it. Started sitting around 6.8 pounds with scope. Once it's all complete. Will be approximately 5.4 pounds with the new scope. See when it's done.
 
They are great if you want a compact rifle. The factory synthetic stocks are garbage though. Mine wouldn't do better than 3 moa until I put it in a B&C stock.
 
I've had a couple. An older blued .223 with an 18-1/2" barrel. Wished I hadn't sold it. A stainless 20" in .243 that I couldn't get rid of fast enough. Rough, bore off-center, crap stock and couldn't shoot worth a darn.
 
I had a Model 7 preadtor in .223. Shot reasonably well, and well built as far as Rems go, but most of what I shoot are faster cartridges and being right up over the back of the gun with the shorter LOP made me uncomfortable.
 
I filled 3 deer tags this year with a Model 7 Kuiu in .308. 3 deers in 3 times out with it, can't complain.

That being said, it's not as accurate as I had hoped. I didn't have time to mess around with it or work up a load so I used a load with 150 gr Accubonds from another rifle. It gave me 2 MOA 5 round groups at 300 yards. Good enough for hunting bit I had hoped for more accuracy.

I just finished free floating the barrel with .020" clearance and I bedded the front half of the action. In the Spring I'll develop a load for it. We'll see what kind of accuracy increase I get, if any.

This was a 223 Rem model 7 cdl. Shot to ~2"
Bedded. Not much difference.
Rebarreled and restocked; now it really shoots!

This thing looks incredible, more details? who did the work? shaved the handle fluted the bolt. slabbed action? finished weight etc?
