Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

I have a #1H stainless laminate in 375 H&H I am quite fond of. Would like one in 6.5x55 if I were to buy another one; most likely give it to my father.

.22lr SVP... only been waiting and asking, begging for it for 9 years...
 
None of them. I've had a few, admired their style, and value for money, But sold them all. And won't buy another. Despite their charms I just don't like how they don't have good triggers, have indifferent accuracy, are so-so for fit and finish, and don't have a good scope mount solution because most scopes are placed too far forward for good eye relief. The safety catches ejected empties. The B models are too heavy, the A models are too muzzle light. The S models are well balanced and pleasing to the eye, but not generally available in cartridges I like. I've gone on to appreciating German Kipplauf break action singe shots.
 
Luckily for me, I got in on the first run of 303 British No. 1's from Prophet River. I had been contemplating having a custom No.1 done in that caliber.
It is the only one I have. It is a true pleasure to hunt with and carry in the field. A lot like my 1905 Ross R model, it just feels right in the hand. Balanced, light, short and a very capable deer/moose caliber.

All of these are fair points, all are fixable with varying levels of effort. You gotta love them for it to be worth it.

Mine has a Trop safety as the stock safety drives me nuts. Peep sight to fix the scope issue.

Hone the trigger if necessary... but most of mine have been decent right out of the box.

My experience with more than 100 No.1's is that the accuracy is either excellent or can be easily made to be accurate, mostly the former. Fit & Finish has been excellent on any that I have owned, wood is intentionally left slightly proud for strength.

Very simple scope fix with one 4BO ring in the rear position... the safety can be bobbed or Trop installed if it is a problem.

I agree on the B models and don't care for the beavertail.forends. I find the A models to be one of the nicest carrying rifles in existence... the S models close behind. What calibers would you want? Gravitating to German rifles, I would think that 7X57, 9.3X62 and 9.3X74R would be of interest? Not .300 H&H or .405 Win? Or step up to the H model for .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, 450/400?
 
Only complaint I have is the quality of the wood has been severly down graded for the majority of new #1's I have seen in the last few years��
I'd love to see this rectified, as Bill Ruger prided his company on the quality of his shotguns and #1's!
There are few gems that seem to sneak out of Prophet River in neat calibres now and again��
I would love to see a scaled or heavy barrel 22lr
Or anther run of Canadian marketed 303's but with all beautiful wood as standard!

Had a bunch, sold most...along with a lot of other guns...and currently have only 3: a .45-70 26-incher (my only scoped .45-70)...a .450/.400 (mostly because I just love knowing that I own a Nitro Express!)...and the one that I consider a true go-to all-around hunting rifle: a 26-inch 1S .300WinMag with a few minor tweaks and improvements.

If they made them in .22lr I would buy one immediately.

And...for some reason...I yearn for a .44mag with shortish barrel and Alex Henry forearm tip. I am hesitant to even mention this one, since I think that m̶y̶ ̶c̶r̶a̶c̶k̶ ̶d̶e̶a̶l̶e̶r̶ Prophet River has such a critter in stock and will goad me into purchasing...must resist...:)
 
I agree the wood selected for these number 1's was historically very good. But not all were as good in the end.
