I want to mount a new handguard to the gas tube on my sks. What is the best way to remove the pin that holds the handguard to the gas tube without causing any damage to the pin or handguard.

I tried once when my sks was pretty much new and it would not budge(I was driving it from the correct side!)So I ended up painting it to match my new stock.Let me know how you made out.

I lightly file the tabs on both sides of the gas tube and then hammer out the pin with a punch. The last couple of Nork SKS rifles have had BOTH sides peened out on the tabs.

Also don't even consider test fitting the system back in the rifle without that pin in or the rod holder tips down and jams the whole system up.

I saw a guy walk into a gun store I goto with this problem, the gunsmith had a hell of a time getting it apart. I believe he ended cutting the gas tube cover off so he could get enough play to move the rod out.

Mine was one of these, the pin was peened over on both ends, it was a real pain but I got it out finally and in went the new handguard.

Get a 2*4, Punch and hammer. Lay the pin part of the gas tube flat on the 2*4 and hammer the pin in to the wood. The wood will support the tin sheet metal and allow the pin to dig in to it. Once its starts to come out its easy.
The pins also tapered so hit the small side of it.

I gave up a long time ago trying to drive those pins out. I center punch one side and drill it out in the press, way easier. Have a new pin handy either way you decide to remove it.

where to get a new pin ?

Who sold you the handguard?

Choate includes a pin.
