Anyone shortened M&P’s beavertale or blasted the slide?

I was thinking of cutting the beavertale on my M&P. I was some pics of other peoples guns that had that done and think the gun looks better that way. I know there are couple of places that do that for you in US, but anyone doing that kinda work here?

What if I just file it down?:ninja:Or would I need to do some hear treatmant to get it to look right?

Also I love the blasted slide two-tone look. Is it difficust to do yourself? Can any gunsmith do that?

BTW If I do that can the gun still be used in IPSC and/or IDPA?

As to your first question I have seen pics of the cutdown beavertail too and it looks interesting. I am not aware of the steps involved to make it happen but perhaps some searching in the forums at mp-pistol.com would give you the answers.

As for the two tone look, I would imagine any gunsmith could do that for you, and it may even be something you could do at home if you have access to a bead blaster.

Mods of this nature would change what division you could compete in in IPSC, you wouldnt be able to enter into Production any longer but I dont see why you couldnt enter into the Standard division. Worst case scenario is you would be shooting in open......

As for IDPA, I cant recall all the rules that define the different divisions, but I think you may qualify for ESP, but dont quote me and please double check the rulebook.

You should be able to simply file down the beavertail, then buff out the files marks with progressively finer sandpaper, just like wood.

Bead blasting the slide is simple too, do a complete strip and blast it with the grit that will (bead, not sand) give you the texture you want. But be aware you'll need to coat it with something, bare steel will rust mucho quick.

M&P has a stainless slide, so I think as long as I whipe it down with an oily cloth after use/handling it should be OK...

I remember seeing it before, it's a bit to polished for my taste, I would like matt finish like the once on the photos posted above...

So does anyone know how it would effect the status of the gun in IPSC and IDPA?

I would say that it would move you out of Production in IPSC.
IPSC Rulebook Appendix D4 19.1 said:
Modifications to them, other than minor detailing are prohibited. Prohibited modifications include changing the original colour and/or finish of a handgun, and /or adding strips or other embellishments.

In IDPA, the refinishing of the slide looks like it would be allowed, but the bobbing of the beavertail would move the gun out of SSP.
IDPA Rulebook Appendix A said:
PERMITTED Modifications (Inclusive list):
8. Custom finishes may be applied.
EXCLUDED Modifications (NON-Inclusive list):
1. Externally visible modifications other than grips or sights.

I totally agree with you, IMO the beavertale make M&P look ugly, without the beavertale the gun looks much cooler.

without the beavertail it's a Glock. the whole point of the beavertail is to give you more control of the gun and stop the slide from biting your hands. if you want it shortened, go for it, it's your gun afterall, but why not just buy a Glock?

Anyone ever been bitten by a Glock or M&P? I reckon one must have skin looser than Pamela's flaps to get the pinch.

Yes, I had too high of a grip and was pinched by the slide...

My original comment was more joke than statement... :p

Even so, I would think that your high grip and subsequent pinch was probably along the side because you have a high forward thumbs grip

....that is to say, the bobbed mod or original beavertail on a M&P wouldn't have made a difference, I would imagine.

If it wasn't for this stupid 12x thing I would be Jonesing for an M&P 9C with the Bob and Bevel package, nitrided slide finish, and Sharkskin grip panels. Damned Government.

I don't think shortening the beavertail 1/4-1/3 of an inch will change anything in tern of control. I really don’t think I’m actually using it anyways.... Plus I love M&P despite of the beavertail not because of it.

I'll likely keep it stock because I want to be able to shoot it in Production, But what kind of guns do people shoot in Standard? (assuming that’s where it would put me).

Aesthetically I really, really like the blasted slide and bobbed tail.
I'd get one and do this to it for sure (if I had money to burn).
