Whats THE Ruger No.1 You Just Gotta Have?

See? SEE??? I knew it!

I've been eyeballing that one for a awhile now; but it has fairly uninspiring woodwork which makes it somewhat resistible...

Let him use it to shoot a cat, and get a few scars on it...then list it up as Used with a few bucks off and see what happens...:)

You don't know Clay the, good luck prying one of his own guns....

My 303, which has somewhat filled the 'all round' bracket for Me , down under on the south east section.

it just does it all, im starting to really use it as a go to bush gun, not phased on the wood as i think its reasonably average..

being rimmed, i think it fits the ruger 1 awesomely!

it needs a 4bo but for $100 it can wait...

The only No 1 I own is a 1S in 7mm-08, so I guess that makes it my "Must have". A great rifle!not to hijack, but all the pics that have a scope mounted on a No 1, show it as far back as the rings will allow and mine is no exception. Has anyone ever tried a scout scope on One?

I built it, 7x57R custom stainless. But in a factory imaginarium rifle? I’d love to see a stainless No.1 with irons and walnut in .300 H&H. I’d also be very tempted by a 1A .25-20.

That wood is incredible!

Never owned a no1. Would love one in rimmed medium bore, 9.3mm or 375 sorta thing...

What calibers would you want? Gravitating to German rifles, I would think that 7X57, 9.3X62 and 9.3X74R would be of interest? Not .300 H&H or .405 Win? Or step up to the H model for .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, 450/400?

Hoyt I respect your experience and like your suggestions but I'm done modifying rifles to make them the way I want when I feel that they should have been correctly configured from the factory to begin with. I've been there and did that with a couple of No. 1A rifles in 7x57, a custom 1S in .35 Whelen, and another in .45-70. Yes they were very good, but didn't satisfy my cravings for "perfection". I am happier if the factory does everything right the first time. I just can't be enthusiastic about acquiring any more #1's in the admittedly good chamberings suggested because I have those covered. I currently have an excellent 7x57R in my Merkel BBF, and a 7x57R Krieghoff drilling, and a really good 9.3x62 in a V-C takedown bolt action Impact Plus. And a gorgeous and accurate Beretta silver sable O/U 9.3x74R, and a nice CZ 550 AHR custom .375 H&H and a Merkel 140AE double in .450-400 3" N.E. So many rifles to experience and hunt with, so little time it seems... I'd now like to try a Merkel K3 in 7x65R!

I’m of the opposite thinking though I respect your take. I customize every rifle I keep that’s at my working grade, the ones above what I can do myself I leave as they are, as they’re better than my work already. The goal is to make it as close to ideal as I can, that’s far more satisfying for me than just perusing catalogs. Sold my 140AE for just that reason, good working gun, but much I would change if keeping it and was easier to just buy a bespoke double, that happened to fit me.

The rifle nerd part of my brain wants one in 450 Nitro. It just seems to make the most sense for the platform.

The poor bastard stuck in a whitetail blind making 50 yard shots part of my brain would sure like a 257 Roberts.

I can't warm up to the beavertail. Not even sure that I want to. A 9.3x74R would be interesting too but I have a hard time doing the math to make a German cartridge belong in an English-style action.

I've got an H in 458 WM. It's fun but I haven't found a reason to use it for years. Maybe I'll scope it for next deer season.

I had an H-model in .458, and one in .416 and a couple in .375 and they were all nice, even though the #1 stock tends to magnify recoil rather than help control it, at least for me.

But the one I kept, at least so far, is the .450/400NE. Haven't shot anything warm with it yet...maybe a deer next year?

Too many rifles...too few tags...:)

i want a 30-30 but i dont think it would be a real 3030 unless it was a dirty ol model 94... between the 3030, 32winch and 44mag i think they are more along the lines of lever guns,
theres something inside me that sort of craves bigger cals like 35 whelens and such, 444 marlin, but the sensible side tells me similiar to BUM, that a 243-270 would be more suited!

i cant help but feel Rimmed all the way though :D

some nice suggestions and wishes on here
