Ok, so I unexpectedly ended up with a Mossberg Shockwave. It's not quite what you think.....

Years ago I bought a Mossy 590 with a pistol grip and 20" barrel. I put wood furniture on it, and then I bought the 14" barrel kit. I don't know why I was drawn to the gooseneck (Shockwave) grip but always thought it looked cool. I know from shooting a pistol grip pump shotgun they're sort of useless.

So whatever, I bought a shockwave grip. I figured I should cover it with grip tape. Better grip helps with control right? Yeah, well I thought so. So I happened to have industrial grip tape so I covered the entire grip. Four custom shaped pieces to enclose the grip with perfect grip, wet or dry.

Have you ever worked with a stationary belt sander? Have you ever slammed your hand on the belt? Why would you? Well that's pretty much what this stupid little boomstick did to my hand. The first shot left my palm missing a good layer skin and throbbing like I just grabbed a skillet from the oven bare handed. Unlike a pistol grip with more of a 90° grip, the gooseneck tends to slide down your hand. Off comes a few pieces of grip tape.

Shooting it from the hip is the most comfortable but you can't really aim at all. Line the bead sight up and you might punch yourself in the face with the recoil. You might not, but the second you tire, Bam! Right in the kisser!

So in conclusion, this thing is pretty stupid. Not pleasant to shoot, not great aim but sure packs nice for camping in bear country.

I've never had an issue shooting a regular PGO from eye level with buck and slugs, and its worth noting that the first time I did so I was in poor health, weighed all of 130 lbs and had surgery maybe 2 weeks prior.

Its easy to do as long as you use the push-pull technique and maintain a reasonable amount of muscle tension.

That said, I find shooting a birdshead grip from eye level uncomfortable, as my wrist just does not want to bend the way it needs to for a proper grip from that position.

Keep the 14" barrel and lose the birdshead grip.

A 410 Shockwave could be fun.

Well, your trying to shoot I it like a bird/trap/skeet gun. First off you’ll have to keep your arms extended as much as possible and do a semi “chicken wing” (point your right elbow out horizontally)

Training and practice.

... and loose the grip tape.

Christ why would you put grip tape on it? There was a group of us shooting clays with a 14" Mossberg. It was fun as hell. It also depends on the ammo you shot. Target loads for clays. LE recoil reduced slugs and 00 buck.

Birds head stocks are shootable for sure, just have to keep it close range. The recoil is fine as well, as the arms take all the recoil, unlike a pistol grip.

Ok, so here is my input.

I have a Tac-14 build and I love it and having lots of fun with it.

Now, the trick is to shoot LOW RECOIL ammo. And with that ammo, I can even hit something at 50 meters ... and I take it out hunting from time to time.

For example the Remington Managed-Recoil Slugger used for the group below ... only has around 1200 fps muzzle velocity .... but that is still plenty to kill a whitetail.

With full power slugs .... the gun will jump out of my hands ... and might smack me in the face ... and land in the dirt in front of my feet .... lol

Your one mistake was to use industrial grade grip tape, they make a fine grip tape and that’s what you need. Or hockey tape, even tennis racket wrap would be better than the 80g industrial stuff you used.

I bet, I’ve used some rougher med grit on a polymer pistol and it was a bit rough on a couple areas of my hands. Thankfully it was just a 9mm and not a 12g in the recoil dept. I think the heavy recoil would exacerbate the wear and tear on your hand.
