List your favourite underrated cartridges

Not surprising at all when marketing hype has fooled people into believing that the cartridge name has to end with "Magnum" or "Creedmoor"

You really have it out for the Creedmoors' eh? Already said so 2x in 40 posts lol...

I am no fan boy but it's mostly popular with long range shooters...

I personally find the .25-06 to beat it in everyway as long as you are fine with a long action and less options for factory ammo!!! It is less of a barrel burner as well.

Too many listing their personal favourites here...

.270Win, .30-30Win, .30-06SPRG, .303Brit...you can't go to any gun show/store or forum without fudds rushing you to tell you you don't NEED anything but those, these "new" calibers and guns suck and about all the moose they killes with one of the above...
Hell those are the calibers (and pretty much only those, besides rimfire and shotgun shells) that Canadian Tire, Wal Mart, TSC and so on stock...

A BIG thing is not many people reload, especially the under 30 crowd and not everyone uses a rifle made before 1970 to hunt!!!

And to those saying .22LR... you need you PAL revoked!!!

Pretty much any of the 257-264-284 calibers with the exception of the adequately rated 6.5 Creedmoor.

Most over rated would be .223, any .30 cal and the .410 bore.

Millions use .223/5.56 and the .30 cals with great success in both hunting and competition...I fail to see how that makes it "over rated"?!
Not to mention ammo is easily available, affordable and able to purchase in bulk!!!

.410 is meh...good for small game but (unless you reload) .410 is usually more than 2x as expensive as 12g and for a shell almost 1/5 the size of a 12g, that sucks. Some also push the ethical limits of a .410 when hunting to "show off".

OK, I'll play......6mm Remington...better than 243 Winchester. Unfortunately because Remington messed up...Winchester won out.

Some cartridges weren't popular due to other cartridges like the 243. The 308 Norma lost out to the 300 win mag. The 300 Savage lost to the 308 win. The 284 win was chambered in the M88 and the M100 win and never really got a chance to show its true potential, this to me is underrated. You could say the same about the 280 rem/ 280 express, the 270 win won out on that one. The 7mm weatherby wasn't as popular as the 270 bee.

That entire statement perfectly demonstrates what I'm talking about.

So success and popularity, for many reasons makes something over rated...?! Is everything good that works, is affordable and so on bad then? You do not make sense.

Bad and over rated aren't the same thing. Read your own post above the quoted one where you point out people telling you you don't need anything other than a 30-06 or a 30-30. Well, those cartridges don't do anything that a variety of others don't also do. Hence over rated

I think those 2 have been around for a little while now. Overrated would be newer cartridges that perform the same as older ones, but with some meaningless minor change..."oh it's a belt-less mag that performs the same as the belted version"...big whoop.
Or "it's a short action cartridge that has similar or slightly less performance then a long action cartridge already out there"....another big whoop.

6.5 x 55

Out performs .260 Remington with light bullets; out performs the 6.5 Creedmoor with heavy bullets; noted for profound long distance accuracy. Load light; ground hogs blow up reall-good;

Load heavy like they do in Europe, and you have a great moose/bear rifle. Regardless of how you load, recoil is in a word, "gentle".

Unlike most universal calibers, this one excels at everything it does.

I'd say the 25-06 is one of the most over rated cartridges out there. Recoils a lot for it's light punch downrange. Very inefficient cartridge due to the poor bullets on the market. Hampered by twist rate restrictions built around bullet design from the 1940s. 257 Roberts beats it in class all day long

Looking hard at starting a new Roberts build, Krieger 1-9” for 115gr VLDs, picked up a whack of Berger 115s, would try swaging down some .264 130gr Berger hybrids too to see if they’ll fly and bought some of those too. Should be a .25 to annoy the 6.5s. Barrel will start at 32” so she should be cruising.

I like the ballistics of a 284win, 280rem or a 270win, I think these cartridges are perfect for deer size game out west and will easily take moose and elk. I can't think of a cartridge that will fit in a kimber m84 style action that could outperform a 284win, there isn't one. Looking at a 270win, what cartridge can you get that outperforms it in a non magnum that ammo is available everywhere that has the same MPBR. I can load 110gr ttsx at 3500 fps. I thank Ardent for that loading, it works! :)

Over rated is when people rate something over it's actual value, nothing to do with age.
