Another 3 gun shotgun question.

I’m looking to try my hand at 3 gun this coming year. Can anyone suggest some shotguns to buy at the beginning? The shotgun I have is great but has two barrels and I’m not going to try reloading after every two shots unless I’m shooting at birds.

The Stoeger m3k and Mossberg 930 both seem like good starter platforms if you’re looking for a semi auto. Tons of aftermarket upgrades for the 930, so you can start out basic and upgrade bits and pieces as you see fit.

Typically you will see tube-magazine-fed, semi-automatic shotguns exclusively in 3-Gun matches. You can use a pump in any division, but if you want to keep up with everyone else, opt for an automatic. Pump shotguns, however, are the only action type allowed in the Heavy Sport division.

I've seen more than one organizing entity and rulebook floating past, so be certain you're working from the one in use at the range where you plan to compete. Compliance with the wrong book doesn't buy you anything. Some folk were trying to convince me that "3-gun" and "multi-gun" were two totally different disciplines. Shouldn't be, but there we are.

Lots of wrong in that post.
Like old303 suggested, find out what your local 3gun divisions, rules, etc. look like as that may help you decide. In all probability, if you find you really really like 3gun you are not likely going to be satisfied with your “beginning 3gun” shotgun and will want to upgrade down the road. But that’s the kind of thing you can only get a solid handle on by playing the game for a bit. Not many of us are still playing with the kit we started with but upgrading is part of the fun! Good luck and have a good time with whatever you get.

Affordable ? M3k. Sub 1k, good aftermarket support (mine has full of Taran Tactical Benelli M2 hammer/trigger springs and made a big difference), built on the Benelli inertia system so it's pretty flawless.

Also check out dssmatch.com . Tactical rifle / 3 gun in the lower Mainland (PoCo, Pitt Meadows, Mission, Chilliwack ranges) usually run a dozen matches a year. 1 day $50 qualifier course, next is in Feb.

Check out the Mossberg 930 JM Pro series, It's a fairly new gun but at about $800-$900 it's very reasonable and all it needs for 3G is a mag extension! I have a fully modded Browning A5 and haven't even seen the 930JM yet, but I'll be recommending it to friends so I can give it a try LOL

Google / word of mouth has not been kind to it in the past. Not very popular up here for those reasons IMO.
 
I'm guessing he's referring to the new 940 that's coming out.

Because the 930 is no where close to new, and if he's actually recommending it to friends then I'd hate to see what he recommends to enemies.

Yep.

M3k Would be my choice on a budget... may need some benelli parts at some point to stay reliable (Hammer, intertia spring, extractor are ones I've seen). Otherwise Versamax's are very popular in Canada due to the 3.5" chamber. I personally run an M2 and the 3" chamber (less rounds in tube) hasn't held me back from winning a fair number of 3 gun matches in Canada. M2 is pretty much the standard by which everything else is judged stateside.

The extractor is the thing some people have run into issues with.

Using a Taran tactical benelli m2 trigger spring takes a lb or two off the trigger (it's heavy stock) and their m2 hammer spring really smooths out the action, taking out the "hump" that could be felt mid-way through racking.
