I was in the market for a "quad gun", looking for a sporterized No.4 Mk.1. Found one, markings are E A L with a four digit number. Rubber butt pad with Jostam stamped on it. No other markings except a circle with a capital A in it. Firearm is in good condition, any idea as to its value? I think it is too good for quad use.

You have one of the last production Lee Enfield rifles, one made in Canada too! Essential Agencies Limited bought unfinished receivers from Long Branch or maybe Canadian Arsenals Limited. These were never taken into military inventory, so there won't be any of the conventional markings. There is also a difference in the rear sight ears. The EAL does not have a specific cut that the military ones do.
You would do well to resell it for $500 and find a cheap cutdown sporter rifle for your quad.

You're looking at $500-$700, and while it would make a very good quad gun, you might want to consider the historical value, and long term potential value prior to dragging it through the mud.

Thanks for the info. It will not be used on the quad! Pictures indicate my rifle is an early Type B.
