Tavor 7 optic suggestions

Have you done any accuracy testing with the rifle? It was rumored that the barrel was now more of a true free floating design and capable of better accuracy.

This thread sucks without pics!

I initially thought that a spare Elcan DR 1.5 & 6x would be the answer for the Tav7, but the weight and short eye-relief left me dissatisfied and looking elsewhere...

Next I toyed with a Burris RT6, 1-6x Low-Power Variable Optic. I have two of these scopes, which are quite good for their retail price of just under $600 (without the Fastfire III and PEPR Mount). After giving the RT6 a try I decided in favour of a bit more magnification and better glass to wring the maximum capability out of the Tav7 and it's reported 1.5 MOA accuracy standard. I finally settled on the Trijicon Accupower 1-8X, which has served me well on other .308 mid-range platforms. I was able to ring the IPSC gongs at 300 and 500m with satisfying regularity using the Tav7 and Trijicon Accupower just the other day. Good enough for me!

Is that a T7 free float? I haven't seen any aftermarket for this platform yet.

The Barrel, Gas System and Cocking Handle Assembly are one unitized component which is free-floated back to the Barrel Trunion. Whether you consider the Barrel to be truly free-floated or not with the Gas System and Cocking Handle attached depends on your perspective, I suppose.

I did not group my rifle with factory match ammo in the brief time that I had it on the range. I zeroed at 100m with South African 7.62x51mm Battle-Pack ammo, and was then able to regularly smack IPSC Steel at 300 and 500m. Next time out I will group with some FGMM 168gr SMK to validate the 1.5 moa factory claims...

Wish the bottom rail on the 7 went back further and or was a bit longer going forward. Looks a lot shorter than on the x95.

Nice rifle. Still on the fence about getting one.

For optics I’d likely just put on a M21 I have as an extra. Or an inexpensive Burris 2-7 or 3-9 E1. Not expensive but work exceptionally well. You won’t win any coolness awards but they work very well.

Agreed. If we're going to get stuck with a longer barrel I wish there was the option for a longer forend for us lanky folks.

Sorry Mark, what I meant was is that an after market free-float hand guard. Looking at it now it appears to be the stock one. The two tone threw me off.

I'll likely pick one of these up once the after market starts cranking out upgrades for this (though I hear the trigger on the T7 is better than the original Tavor).

I am sure someone will make an extended hand guards, I have a Manticore extended hand guard on my X95. They make a lot of parts for IWI bulpups so I am sure they will eventually make Tavor 7 parts also

However being an a larger aluminum part replacing plastic parts, many will then complain about the added weight. Also it will be interesting to see how they can make one that still allows easy access and adjustment of the gas system as its right up front and would be covered by an extended hand guard

Id expect an extended handguard to come out from both Manticore arms and MIdwest industries

I wonder if the curved Butt pads from the TAR21 fit?

I can check that right now

Read that wrong I have the X95 curved butt pad

And its a no go, Tavor 7 is much larger outer shape, about 1" taller and wider at the bottom then then X95

Id assume the Tar21 would be similar in size to the X95 and also be smaller then Tavor 7

X95 vs Tavor 7 just to give an idea of size difference

Maybe someone can measure the distance of the 2 mounting pins and the width at the bottom on a TAR21 buttpad ? And we could compare measurements, even better someone probably owns both and can just try the swap

The Tav7 Trigger press is OK, but nothing to write home about IMHO. My X95 with just the Geissele Trigger Bow has a better Trigger press than the Tav7, which I find quite "spongy" with a rolling break. Don't get me wrong, the Tav7 Trigger is serviceable, just not great. For that reason I have ordered up a TAV D Trigger Pack from Shooting Sight (they ship direct to Canada), which will apparently work in the Tav7. We shall see what kind of improvement that Trigger Pack brings to the table - assuming it works as advertised in the Tav7. The Tav7 has a different Hammer than the X95, which is marked "7.62 NATO". Aside from the Hammer the Trigger Packs themselves are interchangeable.

As for the Handguard, I also find it to be pretty short on the Tav7 - much shorter than the X95 Forend. Hopefully Midwest and/or Manticore will step up to the plate with a replacement, extended Handguard so that we can get better separation between the hands when using a VFG. That will enhance control of the firearm while aiming and under recoil.

At about the 14:00 mark this guy lays the TAR/SAR 21 ontop of the Tavor7 and it looks like the 7 is still larger in height. Not positive how well he lined them up but it looks bigger

The pins look like they will line up, however near the top on the sides the profile is different. The TAR21 has protrusions that are more proud of the sides. On the T7 the same protrusions are not as prominent, and don't quite line up.

Both pads mount to a flat surface, so you could conceivably modify it to work, unless the internal structures are different. Looks like we will be waiting for a new part.

Thanks I'll probably just wait till someone makes a proper replacement, I just got really exited at the thought of being able to order one right now. As I have the Manticore curved butt pad on my X95 and would really like to try one on the 7

As for optics I for the time being just slapped on a Trijicon MRO that I took off another upper I don't shoot much. And I am now on the fence about keeping that and adding a flip to side magnifier. Or going for a LPVO, I also thought about swapping over my Elcan 1-4 but the weight stopped me, I also love my NX8 1-8 on my Stag10 but want to keep it there, and now I just saw on Instagarm that Vortex just released a new Razor HD in 1-10. Was recently thinking of buying their Razor HD 1-6, the 1-10 is now even more tempting

Id like to stay light but still get some distance capability

Looking forward to hear how that pack works on the 7, I recently had a hammer explode in an AR15 trigger pack from Elftmann and am trying to get parts for a broken $450 trigger pack now. The replacement I got, is a newer design and the hammer has way more meat to it compared to the original that broke

Also curious do you have any info on the actual trigger bow fitment between models?

I found that in my X95 the Geissele Super Sabra lightening trigger bow did more for the trigger pull then their trigger pack did for 3X the price

If I did it all over again Id do the bow first

I concur, that bow made more difference than the trigger did. The trigger is icing on the cake though.
It's worth it to do the complete package, but I would start with the bow, and see if you're happy with that.

Yup and the install was even more fun, taking more then 30 seconds and requiring a special tool LOL

Look around for discount, i got mine just north of 2500.00. Different experience, but i like it, shoot Hirt berdan 74 like a million bucks.

No issue on 200 rounds and comfy to shot with low recoil.
