optimal barrel length and loads for the .44RM

That's the jacketed bullet I used in my Marlins & Rem 788. It be a deep digger at the velocities the .44 mag can push 'em at reasonable pressure levels.

Quite a few years ago, when I acquired my Marlin 444, the first ammo was factory loaded with 240gr bullets. After seeing some results on the first two Moose I used the 444 on, I went to reloads and because of those 'results', I opted to go with the Hornady 265gr for a bullet. The end results on Moose after that, were noticeable.
 
I have shot the 265 FTX in many rifles, but in my opinion it is not a good bullet for the 77/44 because the restrictive magazine forces you to encroach too deeply into the case with that longer bullet... the 225 FTX proved to be fine in deer and bears and allows for greater powder capacity... the 265 FTX was designed for the .444, but works great in .44 rifles that don't have OAL restrictive mags.

well...you could always feed one manually and use the 225 for follow up. ;)
