CF Small Arms Program

And here we go again -
1) Will the replaced small arms be sold to the public?
2) Why does it take so long?
3) "They" should just buy the (insert brand of choice)?
4) Why don't they just send everything back through DIEMACO for (insert pet peeve of choice)?
5) Heck, back in my day ........

Oh, and
6) What is the best polar bear defence small arm issued to the CAF?

Can any of these shoot into space?

I completely agree, most of the contracts are to small to interest anybody and DND is such a pain to deal with it is not worth the hassle for those who might care. I am pretty sure Baltimore has a larger sniper program than the CF and won't be nagging their suppliers decades after delivery or delaying payment by years.

I used to work for a company that wanted to GIVE the CF a major warship component in order to work on fine tuning the development of the product, and they couldn't get anyone interested. This product had implications for range, longevity and user safety and the maker was the single largest manufacturer of that item on earth, but no, couldn't give the technology to Canada.

Anyone else think that a 6 x Scope on a gpmg is not a good idea. Yes it can increase your hit probability at extended range, but with a limited field of view you might not see the soldiers you are providing covering fire for.

I was waiting for this comment, haha.

It'll likely be on a QD mount, and if said optic is a Gen III Spectre, 1-6x, even better. As stated previous, GPMG gunners work in teams. Not an issue.

The FN-Mag is shockingly accurate for what it is. We were loading single shots into C6's equipped with FLIR and hitting 4x4 screens at 800m to observe swirl. Pretty good for a MG.

Anyway, this upgrade would be exciting if it was happening 5 years ago. Canadian procurement is pathetic. By virtue of us being so small, you'd figure it would give us some agility in acquiring or testing new kit, however our military is not set up that way.

You guys crack me up..... I needed a good laugh today, between the “Polar bear CAF defence weapon” and the “New Carl Gustav” and the pathetic procurement process... I’m giggling.

Thanks for those comments. And Colt Canada can remain in business forever just cranking out OD green furniture....to replace my black furniture on my SA20 fondling rig. Hahahahaha.

All the Best!!

Who cares anymore.

Should start pitching standard equipment for the new Republic of Alberta Defense Forces and whatever police forces go along with it, be a lot more lucrative and has a higher chance of being completed then whatever stupidity DND latches on to.

Still no word on other systems...

Did you guys know that we have no ground based air defense assets? No shoulder-fired missiles. No AAA. No SAMs of any kind except for those mounted on ships. The Army is basically at Pre-WW1 levels of AA defense.

While we have TOW missiles for heavy AT capability, and it's nice to see them get an upgrade, our portable shoulder-fired AT weapon is the Eryx (although I'm not totally sure about this. I've been out for a while and the Eryx isn't listed on the Army's own webpage any longer). If we're still using the Eryx, it only has a 600m max range. That's laughable compared to contemporary weapons. A replacement has been (unsurprisingly) long overdue and delayed constantly.

Our procurement system is so incredibly messed up.

It's true. The Free Syrian Army has more AA capability than we do.

Not like I'm defending the decision, but it's not exactly like we have many threats where a SAM is necessary. We've got Uncle Sam for that (heh). Even the ADATS had a 21000ft ceiling and limited range, good for local defence against low flyers, exactly the kind a BG or forward airfield would face overseas. They had a replacement slated for a LAV III platform, but it got axed in 2006. Not much point when the insugency you're then fighting lacks tanks and aircraft. So when the budget gets squeezed it's the first to go.

Shame we didn't at least sign on to the BMD program back in the day. That was a missed opportunity.

Actually Uncle Sam got rid of the short range air defence awhile ago, but they finally woke up, and began to reactivate army AD regiments about 3 years ago. They were pulling the Avengers from the warehouse and started running courses on Stingers and Avengers again. The plan is to bring in a new SHORAD platform based on the Stryker with 30mm gun, Stingers and Hellfire.

The threat of UAV needs to be dealt with, and traditional air superiority may not be able to stop UAV infiltration. I think the Ukraine war really woke some people up.

We did buy a bunch of radars based on the Israelis Iron Dome system, but wihtout the means to shoot anything down though.

Interesting that the Ranger's C19 is being called a "sniper rifle", what with the Rangers not allowed to be combatants, that's a bit of an eyebrow raiser.

I'm no longer a fan of striker fired pistols anymore. While they are reliable, their triggers are typically garbage. I'll put my flame suit on for this, but the M9A3 is a fine pistol. Would also be humourous to take that from under the Americans. Thanks for all the free R&D like... :)

Syria showed you can build an ATGM/mini cruise missile in your basement with Alibaba sourced parts. The world is changing very quickly and the best we can do to counter it is a deploying our CISM trap and sporting clays teams.

Wasn't the new 240L (titanium) cheaper (and lighter)than the new C6A1s we're buying?

The CF isn't buying new ones. They are getting refub by Colt Canada.

I just think it'll be neat to (hopefully) be able to mount a PEQ or PAQ onto a C6 for night shooting.

The 'interim' part of the pistols seems like a half measure, buying something for temporary use before upgrading again. Seems like we've done that a bunch with trucks already.

And our TOW is only dismounted, so if we could get a vehicle mounted option that would be swell. Or just do what the Americans did with their Bradley and mount 2x TOW to the turret of their Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

Problem is their temporary solution is still years away, and while they certainly dont seem capable of moving quickly in amy case, there is probably a growing recognition that whatever flawed process they use to buy as a temporary measure will become the de facto permanent solution.
