A different kind of Africa rifle

My rifle runs steel case ammo just fine. Surplus has never been an issue either. I have experienced excellent accuracy with Hornady SST loaded ammo both brass and steel. Oddly enough PPU shoots just as well and to the same POI. An well built and reliable rifle. RLO Custom Leather in the US makes a lovely leather cheek riser that has a pocket on the side for a spare mag (or cartridge loops if you prefer).

I shoot deer with mine out to 200 yards,no issues with 123 +150gr handloads. You can use .311 /150gr SP bullets.

Unfortunately it turns out sights are export restricted as per Numrich, already tried. News to me as I used to buy sights no issue, and the part isn’t marked restricted on the page. Then I tried CZ Europe but they won’t ship an order that small and require payment by wire transfer. And the other items I’d order to bolster the order like magazines they don’t want to ship.

Good news is Folklorestatus has me covered and I’ll make sure he has beer money :)

Unfortunately I bought the 527 without a rear sight, previous owner lost it. Turns out it’s a bear to replace, nobody wants to ship it to Canada. I’ll work on a replacement standard CZ rear sight and run the Mk 4 1.5-5x20 in the meantime.

I recently came across this company, while trying to get some parts from Ranger Point Precision.

I got their info from here:

I've been in contact with Michelle and she's good to deal with. It looks like they import from many suppliers and manufacturers. There isn't a website where you can see an inventory, you just tell them the part you want. There's a fixed cost of a $45 permit fee and $40 shipping (both USD), but if you add in enough parts, those fees start to get more reasonable. I don't know what the upper limit is but I'm going to spend a few hundred on various parts.

Well, other than needing to fab up a really slick peep off the rear bridge that offsets to the rear and folds down, which for the complexity just mentioned almost certainly will never leave my imagination, pretty well my African bush flying dream carbine. Pretty darn good for bush flying here at home too in the meantime.

Much to my surprise while assembling different configurations I found crystal clear and full field eye relief at low power from the little Mark 4 1.5-5x20 when scout mounted forward. Making a dual dovetail adapter to use the rear sight mount as the forward scope base, which turns out to be in the perfect spot.

The mark 4’s illuminated and has a great reticle for quick work, .300 Blackout circle / red dot and drop compensation to 800-900 which matches surprisingly well with the 7.62x39. Even at 5x it’s not uncomfortable to creep the hair forward required to get the full field of view for a longer shot, and if prone it ends up in the right spot anyhow. Nice eye relief Leupold. Keeps the bolt handle fully clear which was my one gripe with CZ527s when scoped.

Smitten with this little thing. Til the next shiny thought passes.

Yea the stock is utterly tiny, the palm swell would probably feel like a chestnut in your hand. Very comfy.

The diminutive proportions are deceiving... and... ahem... how would I know what "chestnuts" feel like in hand? Let's go with a golfball.

I found a lot of milsurp to expand too much and jam up the action. would take a couple good hits to unlock and a big tug to pull back and eject. after that I stopped running milsurp through it...besides the fact the rifle is too good for milsurp. gots to treat it with some respect. ;)

I thought mine would be an inexpensive bolt gun to shoot my stock of Norinco silver box. Mine does what you describe above. It does shoot Hornady SST very well, but that wasn't what I was after.

I have a skinner peep on mine.

It carries well, and fits me well for offhand shooting and field positions. One of my favourite things about it is that is has the perfect lop for me but it is still small and lightweight.

Never seems to make it out deer hunting, maybe next year during the 1 month where only deer are open here. I always seem to grab my 270 or 338 when moose and elk are open.

I love ringing steel with it at 200 yards, with the set trigger it even makes me feel like a good shot.

It shoots well with norinco non corrosive, and even better with 150 grain handloads.

It might actually be my favourite gun that I have in the safe, I think a lot of the posts I've made in the past year are basically clones of this one singing its praises.
