I couldnt sleep the other night... My mind was awake. That usually means yet another project is starting to brew.

Ive got this 16" barrelled Chiappa 92 carbine in .357 thats never impressed me for accuracy (short sight radius and poor ballance the obvious culprates) and Its always bugged me. I also have been soo enjoying shooting berry's 110r 30cal bullets over unique in my 30-303brit and like the idea of sharing components between multiple guns... (ok so thats the best justifying excuse I could conjure up)

Anyway, I have a 30cal barrel off a 700P and figure itd be a fun project as well as a convinient way to end up with a longer barrel...
Ive found very little info on this little wildcat, does anyone have experience?

Google 30 Herrett. Loads of fun. - dan

30 Reese ,possibly a rimmed copy of the 300 blackout for performance and load data

Apparently one wildcat version is a 357 case sized down in the 300 blackout die. Should give the same performance and there's no requirement for any custom order parts, dies, reamer, brass or anything. That's the way I would likely go if looking at this project.

Yes there definatly seems to be several versions of it out there. I just havent found much info beyond a name, "has similar balistics to 300aac", "is fun to shoot".

From what I've gathered the 30 reece requires case trimming and is more of a 30-38spl round. 30 herrett is a chopped down 30-30 casing, 30-357maximum seems to have a following, 30-357 paxton is the classic name (along with 30-357 haskins) but i havent found any info on these last two past their names.

At least one guy says he made one with a case neck .2" long and a 40deg shoulder... he called it a 30-357sharpes. I kinda like the sound of that although i may go with a .25" neck... I'll be making a reamer or else single point cutting my chamber and die so I'm not worried about whats available.

Anyway, has anyone played with any of these? Thoughts? Ideas?

they are a ###y lil 30..Actually just finished this on a lil martini this afternoon .Just basically a rimed 300 BO

That should be accurate enough for you. ;)

Nice group Ted .You version has more neck than the 300BO I went with .The BO I chose as it doesn't require anything special besides the DW brass

pmatuk, That looks very very nice! If I wasn't dealing with OAL restrictions, I'd be tempted to go that route!
Are those 150grs? Have you tried it yet?

Whynot, Thats some very very nice shooting! What kind of firearm are you running it in?

Update: I pulled my rifle apart and cant say I'm impressed with the bolt face/ejector and my rifle has a large firing pin diameter...

As you can see, the design of the ejector on these takes up almost half of the bolt face and with the large firing pin hole, there isn't much material between it and the ejector. That wouldn't be an issue if Chiappa had machined the ejector to properly sit flush with the bolt face. But as it stands, its probably .005" or more shallow and has caused the bolt face/firing pin hole to deform.

Because part of my interest in this project is to see what I can do on both the high and low end of the performance spectrum with this little wildcat, I want to make sure my rifle is prepped to handle pressure as best this design of firearm can(within reason). I'm going to make a new bolt and probably redesign the ejector. Also, looking at the action, I think I could gain some OAL grace by making a new elevator(and then probably new loading gate) to accommodate the longer/skinnier bullets...

This just got interesting!

just fired it for function 150 HNDY3031 -17gr IMR 4227 according to QL with 24"GT barrel it should be 2000 fps and around 40K pressure .will be scoping it up today and make up a few different loads to try WHEN IT WARMS UP ,bloody chilly with the wind

I agree! It's a pretty standard size for low pressure/BP loads though. The pin measures .105" and the hole is .116". Mine's going to be .07" with a .072" hole. Should be a huge improvement...
