Hi Folks,

Pretty much got the repro stock fitted on, but the barrel band is tricky.

Is the barrel band the right shape?

Do I remove more wood?

Do I use a clamp around the barrel band and use the screw to pull it into shape?

Thanks!

Hi. first off either the barrel is NOT seated in the fore properly OR its the hand guard with incorrect seating. Wood should be touching.
Check out a web sight for proper bedding if its the fore. That should get you close. Don't be afraid to slightly squeeze the band a tad in a vice
either horizonal or vertical to get a correct curvature. Try fitting the band with the wood not on the rifle first. Remember all Enfield screws go in from the left side. You may have to take out a sliver of wood so that the swivel won't bind but other than that the wood outside is rarely touched unless it is necessary to relieve wood to lessen screw tension. JOHN

The barrel and action does bed well, had to trim and adjust the wood to get the pieces to even get this close. Things are tight. I was hoping to not have to open everything up the entire hand guard pieces...

Looks like the band is not even close to closing up. As jtaylor mentioned, either the barrel isn't completely seated in the forend or the hand guards need to be relieved significantly. The forend and hand guards should sit flush to each other with even contact along their entire length. The hand guards should not contact the barrel, though.

Out of curiosity, is this one of those Sarco sets?

Get a big piece of sand paper and slide the top handguard over it until the top guard is tight to the forend . Sliding the guard over the paper
will keep the sanding somewhat even

Both original and reproduction stocks are cut oversized to allow for fitting to your rifle.

What you have is to be expected with new wood, perhaps even more so with repro wood.

Fitting the handguards and bands is one of the last things to do. You are happy with the bedding and have correct upward pressure at the muzzle end?

The barrel band's inletting, in both fore stock and hand guard will need to be adjusted to allow the band to fit.

Don't crank on the screw to pull it up until you are fairly close. And putting it in a vice and squeezing anything is not a good idea.

The parts, including the screw are castings and are relatively soft iron. Very easy to strip threads or chew the crap out of the screw slot.

Patience is key. File a little, test fit, file a little more, test fit again. Smoking the inside of the band with a candle flame will leave black witness marks on the wood where the band touches to help you remove wood in the right spots.

Good luck and keep smiling!

I would buy some n.o.s bands from numerich first. I had a repop band for a no4 that had factory fitted wood, but original band threads were stripped. And it was way tight. So it was either a no5 band or poorly made.

Edit..
Those hand guards look awfully gappy..
