A 303 British 174gr / H4895 load, peak pressure comes when the bullet has traveled 1.2" down the bore
Careful Woodchopper. You are inserting logic into what heretofore has been a fun discussion of the absurd.
I have a 300WM, I throw a 200grn bullet at 2960FPS and its not unpleasant.
what the hell is the step ladder for? perhaps where you hunt you have some weird limitations.
if your going to buy a short barrel carbine perhaps you need to look at something that is chambered with an appropriate case/chamber.
308 is not going to work as it was designed for rifles with 20" barrels.
I would not buy a 300WM with a 18" barrel either it would be a waste of case capacity, bigger cases, more powder but slower powder, more velocity, barrel length does not really change that but a shortened barrel will result in a loss of potential velocity.
perhaps what you need is a 30-30, that has a reasonable case capacity for a faster powder, and a shorter barrel will be sufficient to use what potential there is in that case.
A step ladder is useful if you hunt in deer in the bush around here with a 300 Win mag. It allows you to recover parts of the deer that end-up too high in the trees to reach from the ground.
Anyway a lot of folks are buying shorter barreled 308 these days. 30-30 no thanks.
A 16-20" bolt gun in 7.62x39 is a good solution for people who like a handy, deer-capable brush gun that is a pleasure to shoot. However I'd go for the same bullet weight in a 308 Win (loaded with say 125Gr PSPs - of which I already have many) but yielding another 200 or so FPS over what 7.62x39 can deliver.
I don't want some light load of slow powder (which will still deliver a pretty significant, unnecessary muzzle blast) but a decent load of a faster powder (without the drama). Sort of a 7.62x39 plus load - loaded in readily available 308 cases.
This thread has been very entertaining, and somewhat educational. But for practical hunting situations I haven’t learned much, but I have a new 300 WM Iam working with, so I will have to remember to take a step ladder when I take it hunting next fall.

Do not fear the 30-30........
You need not be afraid or intimidated by it ....... you won't immediately turn into a Fudd if you own one and hunt in the bush with it.....![]()
I'm not intimidated by a 30-30. Its not the ballistics (or lack thereof). I'm just not the cowboy-type and consider these things to be really goofy guns.

They are actually great guns, if you like hamburger.
My 243 does more damage than my 300 mag with similar shots and bullet placement. 300 mag burns a clean hole through (heavier bullet), 243 more explosive and more bullet fragmenting (lighter bullet). Deer also run further on lung shots with a 300 mag...
Common misconception, its all about bullet construction and velocity...

Agreed!! I have shot quite a number of deer with the 308 Norma Magnum/180 Partitions. Don't remember any being converted
to hamburger in the field, lol. Dave.

OK, I'm getting it now. So you've never actually shot a deer with a .300WM, nor seen any shot, and you're actually about 14. All makes sense now.
