what do you think is the most versatile cartridge ever made?

Try a Tikka T3..............

Thanks for the tip Doug!

I find the prices on Tikka have gone up considerably over the years. They are nice firearms for sure, but at the numbers they're at, it opens a lot of doors.

Not that I wouldn't consider one!

Blackjack has been a game changer in .25 with their 131gr VLDs. G1 .670 / G7 .330, and will fly at around 3,000fps from a short action case (.25-08 / Creedmoor / etc). That’s supersonic to 1 mile with almost no recoil to speak of, and point blank to 300 yards with no holdovers when zeroed at 250 +\- 3”. Only 2.5 feet of drop from the same zero at 500 yards. I suspect we’ll see more of that, I think the modern .25 has a bigger niche than the modern .270, there’s a legitimate gap between 6mm and 6.5mm for high BC offerings and the quarter bore aligns very well with short action case capacities, and bullet weights for big game.

When Marshall was selling Matrix, i contacted the new owner. He was interested in 6.5 and 7mm because.....target shooters buy in 1k increments; whereas, hunters buy a box of 50.

Had not followed .257 projectile development, as i moved on to .308 in 06, norma and win mag. Good to see high bc .257 finally developed. Might see me get my wife onto the 25-06 Ruger target/varmit. Instead of a larger bore.

7mil mag is a HORNY round!! I love the ballistics on it, but have yet to purchase a firearm chambered in such. (For that caliber, I'll go with an A-bolt, X-bolt, Weatherby or Sako) Anything less would be like putting a polyester suit on James Bond.

Now, it was thrown around at a table with my buds about the very wonderful ballistics on the 7mil mag. To which all agreed, however... it was mentioned by one of our buds that particular round likes particular ammo in particular guns.

To expand and compare.. you can take any firearm chambered in 308, throw any store bought ammo in it, and it will sustain consistent groupings. Whereas the 7mm mag is more finicky, and apparently it likes more specific ammo types in the firearm you are using OR you will have a greater variation in group sizes. Maybe you could expand on this?

I have not tested this theory, not yet, but as soon as I get something in 7mil mag, I will.

I handload so never been an issue for me with the 7 rem mag that a little tinkering with charge or length couldn’t fix. Of note the factory loaded HSM Trophy Gold 168gr Berger Hunting VLD HPs were absolute tack drivers in my T3 7mm. Lots of good choices for handloading for whatever the target.
-Nosler AB 140,160 for deer, sheep, goat
-Nosler Partion 175 for the bigger bodies
-Barnes TTSX 150 if prefer the mono route for bone and passthrus

The 7 rem mag is pretty versatile and with a limbsaver is pretty tame IMO. Can always set up with a muzzle brake and cap as well. I have a brake/cap for mine. POI will change a bit. I sight in with the brake on, then take off and throw on the cap for hikes in/out in case need to deal with something without ear buds at close range. When time for the spot and stalk simply thro your break on and when ready for the shot pop in the ear buds and it will feel like you’re shootin a 243.

It was a little more ;) 'convenient' for me when Marshall's operation was based/located close by in Crofton. After finding out about him and his products, I called him and made arrangements to visit his operation. Prior to leaving, I did purchase a few of his products. I picked up some of his 290gr bullets for my 9.3x62, ;) aka, 366 Wagner. These I have since traded off to another site member. The others I acquired are the 270gr and 300gr for a couple of 'variations I have in 375.
On another note that you've made mention of, in .25-06 a bullet that's worked the best for me, by far, is the Sierra 117gr Spitzer BT.

308 for light recoil 30-06 for performance.
if you're going after polar bear or such recoil won't matter at the time. it's just practicing with the rifle and sighting it in that you'll notice recoil. a polar bear was taken with a 6.5 creedmoor recently, but good shot placement is key.

get a 30-06 with a limbsaver on it and a muzzle break. you'll be fine.

How was the accuracy of the 375 bullets, and how did they perform on game?

12 GA : shooting from bean bags & fireworks to ball bearings!

You know, in my opinion you're right and you're wrong.

You're right if versatile means shooting skunks and blackbirds, Black Bear, most deer hunting, yes even Mule Deer in the mountains. Even in a lot of mountains ones success doesn't depend on the specific gun they have, I'm looking at a mountain right now, it has 7-9 species of Big Game on it, depending on how one counts the now sacred cow Grizzly and the Wolf, success on any of them won't matter between a decent 12 gauge slug gun vs a 300 Weatherby.

Wrong in that in BC anyways they are not legal for Moose, Elk, Sheep, Goat. If legal, one would be at a severe disadvantage for Elk especially.

To me versatility means answering yes to "would I carry this during Elk season?".

I don’t have one but 30-06 would be high on my list. Load heavy bullets for big critters, light bullets for little critters, shoot it well. I have it’s little brother, 308 win, which would fall right under 30-06 on my list.

Like the thought of 9.3x62 but most rifles tend to be light and the bullets heavy. Personally i really liked the 350 rem mag. For me, really good power with tolerable recoil
