Stag 10 Upper With 16 Inch Barrel.

Hi,
Has anyone built a Stag 10 upper with a 16" 308 barrel. As I understand it, the upper is not restricted. It only becomes restricted as a complete rifle. I see there are some 16" barrels for sale. I was thinking I could get a gun smith to build the upper if I procure the barrel and upper receiver. I guess I would then be buying a complete Stag 10 and switching out the uppers.

Your assessment would be correct, only the receiver is restricted or non-restricted. However, when you assemble said hypothetical upper to a non-restricted lower, you must call the RCMP and register it. Take it to the range for your intended session, and then, upon returning home and putting the non-restricted length upper back on, you will need to call the RCMP again, and, this time, may require a verifier to complete the switch for you(?). I don't fully understand the role of a verifier, but I know it's something to do with switching a firearm from restricted to non-restricted.

Wow! That's way too complicated.
 
There has been about 5 post pertaining to this intentional castration of a nr rifle with other cheaper restricted options available and not kicking the owners of the other stag 10s that don't need to have a measly 1.6 inches of barrel removed square in the reproductive bits.
 
Low, for so much trouble, get a 18.5 barrel non-threaded and have the gunsmith port it, don't use a brake. Or get a bull heavy 18.5 without brake.
A good brake is about 2.5" anyway. So your 16" barrel with a good brake is 18.5.
I still think it is not worth the trouble for just 2.5"

The OP cannot see into the future, but in the present would like a 308 rifle that is easier to wield, at the range. If they all go extinct, like the dinosaurs, it's a mute point. The OP might just have to buy a complete rifle that is non restricted, then buy the parts to build a restricted rifle. Then enjoy both rifles for as long as I am allowed to have them.

Let me throw that question back at you. Why do manufactures offer, and why to people buy AR15s with different length barrels. The answer is because they can. That is until the day comes in which they can't. By all accounts that day is approaching quickly. In the mean time I will enjoy what I have.

AR 15 is already restricted, matters not what the bbl length is on them

well I suggest that if he wants a 16" bbl to run at the range easyer, get a restricted AR10 of which there are a few out there, and go nuts put on a 12" bbl

Make sure to enlarge your legal defence fund IMMENSELY if you start playing this game. When it comes to gun law the onus is on you to prove your innocence. Having/owning the restricted upper and the NR lower is just an invitation for LE to mess with you. Since the Hasslewander decision was thrown out the gamble in court is far higher.
 
still not sure about the frt on the stag 10.
i'm in the process of putting together a 12.5 version, but I may have to find another platform, as I won't wait 1-2 years for the frt.
