Hi Guys

Im looking to build a longish range coyote rifle off my Tikka T3 lite in .243. Im thinking for a stock buying the Strike Nuke by Cadex then swapping out the pencil barrel to something with a med weight to it...nothing super heavy but heavier then the factory sporter. What barrel length would you suggest? What Twist rate? What barrel maker?

Id like to shoot either a 90 or 103 gr ELD X

Cheers!!

Depends on your terrain and general hunting style a lot. I prefer short barrels as we often end up humping through the bush, and a long Barrel is an excellent noise maker on the trees when trying to be stealthy. But if we are just going to sit in stands all day I might bring out the longer tubes.

Looking at doing the same thing with a T3X Stainless in 243. One stock I have been looking at is the GRS Berserk which will take a Tikka action. Nordic has them in stock (no pun intended). Not sure if the Strike Nuke can take a Tikka although I would love the Cadex and they are both about the same price. And as always the Bell and Carlson stocks.

What scope are you thinking? I have a Z3 4-12x50 BRH on my T3 270 and love that (clear and light - rifle +scope = 7lbs 9 oz) but have been looking at others just to try something new.
Z3 4-12x50 BRH - has to be considered again due to clarity, low weight
NF SHV 4-14x56 gorgeous glass but quite heavy otherwise awesome
Nikon X1000 4-16x50 - clear glass, better price point but read that eye relief at higher power is not great, parallax issues and just a bit lighter than the SHV
Vortex PST 3-15x44 - just reading about this one now

Im hunting big open prairie, no trees anywhere. I basically like to get on the high ground and call. Ive been using a .204 pretty much exclusively and limit my shots to 300 yards max. Id like to be able to get out there around 600 plus. I plan on practicing all summer on my steel gongs at longer ranges.

As for Optics Mineguy, I have a Bushnell LRTS 4.5-18-44 G3, have a few of them on my hunting rigs and absolutely love them.

If you plan on keeping hides I would stick with the .204. If you don’t care I would rebarrel to 257 wby mag, 26” tube and put a NF SHV on it. Make yourself a drop chart and your good for well past 600.

8 twist for sure
I would go with a similar contour to a rem varmint or Med Palma

Might be worth calling insite arms, they might have a tikka prefit and know a thing or two about smashing dogs at long range.

In that case you might as well go all out. My .243 has a fluted 26” barrel and a 1-7.5 twist. Seems to handle to longer bullets pretty well. Also MDT just put out a stock very similar in some ways to the Nuke.

Thanks, I will look into Insite Arms. Would be great to find a .243 prefit in a contour similar to the CTR...Im assuming thats close to what you mentioned above.

To shoot 103s yeah a 1-8 would be good. 22”-24” I certainly wouldn’t go with too heavy of a barrel or you’ll never end up taking it anywhere you got a pack it. I would go with a #3 or #4 probably a benchmark 5R. But there’s lots of good barrels out there. If you’re not rigged up to shoot at .243 I would look at a 6mm Creedmoor

Weight is an issue for sure but I really dont have to walk far to my stands. Most are 100 M from where I park the truck or if further I pull a small sled and put my cased rifel in there.. Id really like something around the weight of a CTR, bit heavier then my T3 Lite but nothing to crazy.
Im fully stocked to shoot .243 and prefer to stay with it...I love the calibre.

Cheers!!

Don’t forget the KRG Bravo as a chassis option to compete against the Nuke and the XRS. I am very happy with my KRG but haven’t had the chance to try the others. Simple drop-in fit for Tikka actions. Personally I stayed away from the GRS because most models are impossible to shoot weak side.
