long range predator rifle

Got some deals on 8 twist SS match barrels in #4 contours that will finish at 26".

Can also offer prefits for the Tikka in steel or CF wrapped.

Bundle it up with a Cadex or MDT chassis and save even more.

Optics too...

22 creedmoor or 6 creedmoor. .243 will certainly work as well, but it's not as optimized to run long, high BC bullets from a mag fed configuration.

More then a few companies making Tikka prefits these days - Proof, Hardy, Carbon 6, (all 3 available with carbon fiber wraps, the first two have shouldered options), PVA, OM rifles, X-caliber, McGowan, Criterion, etc.

This Proof shouldered prefit comes in 6 CM (also comes in .243 if you are set on that choice): https://proofresearch.com/barrels/tikka-steel-pre-fit-specs/

If it was me, I would be looking at a shouldered Proof or Hardy prefit, or I would be sending it off to Insite Arms for them to spin up one of the above or using a blank from Krieger, Bartlein, Hawkhill, etc.

If cost is a big concern, there are lots of more budget options, most utilizing a shouldered barrel. The great thing about Tikka's is that there is a plethora of options, so you are definitely not limited.

Besides the Strike Nuke, that looks like a nice budget chassis, I would also look at the KRG Bravo (my personal favorite budget chassis), and MDT's new XRS chassis may be worth a look as well.

Hi Guys

Im looking to build a longish range coyote rifle off my Tikka T3 lite in .243. Im thinking for a stock buying the Strike Nuke by Cadex then swapping out the pencil barrel to something with a med weight to it...nothing super heavy but heavier then the factory sporter. What barrel length would you suggest? What Twist rate? What barrel maker?

Id like to shoot either a 90 or 103 gr ELD X

Cheers!!

scott_r, talk to Shane at EM Precision. We just had them on our Gunning Around podcast discussing Tikka upgrade packages that they are now offering. It would be worth it for you to check that option out.

My current 243 barrel is about done. It’ll be a 1-7 6CM on the next barrel. The 243 is fine, but the 6CM is more fine. ;)

What makes the 6 CM that much more superior over the .243 win?

Cheers!!

All things equal, ballistically it's a wash between the two. The .243 is a great cartridge.

The 6 creedmoor has a shorter COAL, so you can more optimally load the heavies to fit in AICS pattern mags. With a longer COAL cartridge like the .243, the longer higher BC bullets need to be seated in the case deeper to fit in the mags. This takes up case space that could be otherwise used for powder, and give you a long jump to the lands if your chamber isn't throated correctly.

I'm not sure if the 90's you may run will present any issue with the COAL and length. But if you do decide to go with heavier projectiles, say 105-115 grains, you will have more limitations with cartridge length on the .243 then the 6 creedmoor.

Alternatively, if you want to stick with .243, you can get a KRG Bravo chassis that accepts the CTR mags, which I believe will fit a longer COAL. If this is the case, you mitigate the .243 COAL problem with heavies and AICS pattern mags.

Something to consider and look into if you want to mag feed .243.

Now that’s something I didn’t know. The CTR mags are much much better than the AICS mags in my opinion.

I've owned a couple 243s and really like the cartridge, including burning out my current one, so I'm no hater. kthomas outlined some of the small advantages of the CM. I'd also add brass life is a little better with the CM case, straighter walls and sharper shoulders. It seems slightly easier to do load work up for, but I've only got a small sample size, so could be completely fluke. Like the 7RM, the 243 has also been proven to have unexplained pressure excursions, so that may be a consideration for you.

Like I mentioned, I have 1-7 JC barrel waiting to go on & I'll be going 6CM, but you really can't go wrong either way, IMO. Binderless AI mags have plenty of room for most 243s, if that's the route you were planning on going for mags. I could continue shooting the 243 and be perfectly happy.

6mm Creedmoor is the better cartridge. Nothing wrong with the 243, but if you're going to rebarrel you might as well go with the better cartridge. Excellent factory ammo available, great brass, and die sets are common in the 6cm

The 6cm is a great cartridge That is stupid accurate and works amazing for long range shooting. Speaking from experience though it is nowhere near a fur friendly caliber. I have tried multiple 100+ grain bullets and have yet to find one that won't almost cut them in half. I have suspended testing on coyotes for until the fur market drops. It hurts my soul to be losing $100 every time I have to throw a blown up coyote away.

I hear ya, I took the .243 out last trip and one was shot perfect no damage the other one I near took his whole head off. Hard to beat my .204 for fur friendliness.

I know ur set or seem to be on 243 but what about a zippy 22 cal rifle. You can still shoot em a long ways off but don't ruin the hides. I use my 22-250 and can dump them from long distance with little recoil that lets you spot and stay on target for multiple engagements. I think Harley and Andrew are dustin them with 22 Creedmoors(Insite Arms). Lots of bullets and components available. Cheers Chris

If you want to keep weight down, the strike nuke is quite heavy. The MDT XRS is super nice and light and the KRG bravo is decent and light. EM Precision can supply any of those and provide barrels and fitting. They also have some Oregon Mountain carbon barrels that are WAY cheaper than Proof or other brands.

I agree with some of the comments about the 6,5 or 6 creedmoor. I went through that same reflexion...

I had dies, brass, all the supplies to reload 243, so I bought a Tikka varmint in 243. It is now impossible for me to shoot cartridges with OAL I would like (near the riflings), and also impossible to buy match 105ish grains bullets. I tried over and over to shoot 87-105 grains bullets and the barrel can’t stabilise them...

We learn everyday... I am happy with the rifle, but knowing that I would definitely buy a 6,5 or 6mm.

Better choices as far as twist rates.

Now if you want to swap the barrel and get aftermarket mags, you just solved the issue of the Tikka 243...!

Cheers!
