New 6.5 from Weatherby coming

I’ve been dreaming lately of a .284 Winchester that was lengthened to a 7RM OAL. What’s not to like? Then I started dreaming about actually making one and investing heavily into it. Then I realized this it’s basically a 7mm/6.5 RPM and that it’s likely already on the shelf at Weatherby just waiting for the 6.5 to lose its 1st year shine and then they’ll drop the 7RPM. I just bought a 284 long action that I don’t really want to keep as so, as I just built a 7-08 and was thinking how or what to rechamber it to. Maybe I should just wait till the 7RPM comes out? That would work perfectly with that existing chamber. 7RM is my all time favourite, but rechambering to another 7RM would involve opening up the bolt face, which isn’t a big deal, but gives me an excuse to play with something new:)

It sounds a lot like you're talking about a 280AI.

Nah I’m thinking it would be a little hotter, as a 280 is a thinner case. More volume in what I’m thinking, might even just surpass a 7Rem by a hairs width. Just winter time blues really, they’ll all kill em dead. To me a 7Rem is as close to perfection as it gets, but I’m curious how that goes if Weatherby releases a 7mm RPM. It seems a lot of the newer trend is belted mags are from the devil. Never really got that. The 28 Nosler might be just a tad hot to really catch on big, but a 7RPM might find a real little sweet spot. The explosion of the 6.5hipster proves that not everyone is focused on speed alone anymore

Is the AI case narrower than the 284? It certainly doesn't look it. I also know that their new Backcountry is selling well for them in 280AI so I'm not sure they'd kick that hornet's nest although at the same time it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

A 7-378 Weatherby Mag interesting but how much of an overbore is that? if a 6.5 300 is a barrel burner what would make a 7-378 any different all with an increased case capacity?

I want a 270-378 just because I think it'd be funny to spite Nosler.

RKM456, it may look like they’re very similar but because of the rebated rim on the 284 it’s actually a little chubby which gives that RPM some serious case capacity. It’s at 81gr of H2O vs 68gr in the 280AI. The 7RM has 82gr for interest’s sake.

I was speaking to Adam Weatherby the other day asking some questions about the 6.5 RPM and when would we be seeing the 270 280 300 and 338 RPM ?
He didn’t say it wouldn’t be happening !
I suspect we will see them follow the 6.5 RPM shortly.

Interesting to see WBY finally joining the 21st century :)

Nosler 280AI brass averages @ 74.0grs h2O from four different 280AI I have measured brass on, 7mm Rem Mag has avg @ 85.7grs h2O over multiple rifles, multiple brands of brass

I was also deducing it from posted velocities of both cartridges. If memory serves the 6.5 RPM is only a couple hundred feet faster than the 280AI. Mind you that's kind of speculative at this point.

Totally speculative, you’re right. But if true, that’s a considerable amount. To me, 100fps doesn’t usually warrant a new cartridge unless it does something else the other cartridge can’t. At 200fps that’s a considerable jump already, and while we continue to be gun enthusiasts and spend immense amount of money enjoying all things guns and the minute differences that come with all the guns in our stables, I’d say it warrants another cartridge.

But then, at another 200fps, I’d say that bumps it right next to a 7RM, so why another ballistic twin? Well, I’d say it easily has a chance at success (although we all know that depends more on marketing than actual qualities) given that, in recent years we’ve seen all the WSM family do fairly well, when in reality the 7wsm and 300wsm basically matched ballistics of the 7RM and 300WM. What did those do? Put those ballistics into a short action and got rid of the belt. I’d say what the 7RPM could do is put an extra in the mag, and get rid of the belt, and likely feed nicer than a WSM, and they could likely sell it as a “non-magnum” even though it’s accomplishing the exact same thing. They could sell that idea with the word “efficiency” or something like that. For the record I don’t mind belted mags even though people these days seem to dislike the belted mags.

Todbartell, your numbers basically prove the same point, I think ours are just different as we must be talking overall capacity vs usable capacity, but again, basically shows the same spread I’m talking about.

My buddy picked up a MK V in 6.5 RPM recently. I'm curious to see how it stacks up over a chrono with my 280AI, and in turn how that velocity actually intersects with accuracy. For what it's worth Weatherby lists their factory loaded 6.5 RPM 140gr Accu-bond ammo at 3075fps where Nosler lists their factory loaded 280AI 140gr ballistic tip at 3150fps

Interesting. Let us know how it goes! There’s some difference there comparing a 6.5 to 7mm as well. I’m talking about the potential of a “potential” 7RPM

If memory serves I'm giving up 2 inches of barrel, but we can both use factory loads and get a feel for what the velocity difference is.

A 7mm RPM would give 75 fps more than a 280 Ackley. A 7mm Rem Mag will make 85 fps more than a 7mm RPM, when all cartridges are loaded apples to apples in same barrel lengths

The more I think about it, the more interesting I find the idea with other necks. A 7mm RPM would run pretty close with a 280AI, but in 6mm, 257, or .30
