Slug Gun

Deer hunting this fall, one guy had a 12 ga. Derya. One slug went through one deer and wounded a deer standing behind it, his second shot brought down the second one. On the other hand an experienced hunter who was pushing carries a 20 ga. because it's so much lighter.

My personal preference is a Winchester SX3 deer gun. I'm sub MOA at 100 yards with 2 3/4 accutips.

We have a few 20 ga users in our camp - IMO, if the shot isn't in the boiler room the deer isn't dying anytime soon. This is just my opinion based on my experience. There is NO room for error with these 20 ga sabots in my opinion. One example my sister shot a doe twice at 100 yards with 2 3/4 inch accurtip. First shot was off the mark by 2 inchs and hit the shoulder. Second shot through the boiler room. Double lung. Deer died about 30 yards away. When skinning we discovered the shoulder shot didn't even go through the shoulder blade. If shot 2 didn't connect than it was a wounded deer - not fatal.

I don't buy this at all. The difference in ballistics between a 12 and 20 at 100 yards are not enough to make a difference.

The 12 and 20 run roughly the same speed and trajectory. Ones 385 gr ones 260. Ones 60 cal the other 45. Accutip numbers. There is a big energy difference. I’ve shot many deer with savage 220 and very few pass throughs. Even broadside doe heart shot at 100 yards was not a pass through.

if all I was hunting was deer, the 20 would be fine. I bought my 12 for Elk and Deer, gonna try and hit the range friday take it for a test drive.

I guess, I should have worded my thought differently. At 100 yards, do you really think a 12 gauge is gonna kill a deer that a 20 gauge won't?

I haven’t lost a deer I’ve shot with the 20 yet. But I do believe they’re easier to track when bloods running out both sides. I shot a spot and stalk buck quartered hard away at 30 yards on a rainy day in fairly open bush. Shot behind the ribs through the heart and slug under the hide opposite. He only went about 80 yards but I felt fortunate that I saw that white flag on the bush floor just by stumbling upon it. I couldn’t find a blood trail. In dense bush it would have been difficult.
I used 12g sabots when I was younger and there was definitely a shock factor involved in the kills that were normally drt. The 20g accutips expansion performs perfectly but they definitely lack the jam of the 12. I’ll be using a browning abolt 12 next season but I haven’t decided to part with the 220 yet because it seems to be a lucky deer magnet.

I've had the Lyman 525 mold for a few years now & it produces nice slugs that shoot well. While these uber air rifle pellets work ok on deer at closer range in the bush, I much prefer a proper 12 bore Paradox type boolit to get bone smashing, deep penetration on larger critters. The Old West mold I bought awhile back produces an 825 gr , plain base boolit that when tossed out at a mere 1100 fps will plow through both shoulders of any critter in my parts inside 100 yds. (Length ways through 'em as well.) Great for alder pruning as well.;)

I will say both bucks I shot with my 20 gauge (both 50 yard shots broadside) ran like I missed.
Heart shot the first one and bullet exited low opposite side and left a blood trail 6" wide and the buck piled up within 70 yards.

The next didnt leave any blood where he stood, took me a few minutes to find blood to see exactly where he ran. Double lunged, bullet exited higher than entrance ran 50 yards up a hill and died.

Remington Accu tips. I still like the 20 gauge even though I do miss the knock down power of the 12.

Another guy I hunt with shot 2 big bucks this year with his 20 gauge. A nice 8 point and a 28" wide 11 pointer 30 seconds later. Both bucks ran about 50 yards with lung shots.
