What do you guys use to de-lead your bores? I have an old 30-30 I bought used and it's leaded up pretty bad...

A good cleaner, M pro 7 is my choice. Then brass pot scrubber around a brush, repeat. The barrel is steel and the scrubber is softer but harder then lead.

I’d vote wipe out. It’s crazy the goo that stuff loosens up! I did an old Springfield trap door... wow that was gross! And it didn’t seem that bad to begin with.

I'll check if I can find some of that copper pot scrubber...sounds like the bomb

Take a magnet with you. Lots of off brand ones are copper plated steel. Don’t want those. When you do find the copper ones, you want to wrap long strands around a brush so it’s a very snug fit in the bore. The edges on the copper strands will cut the lead out. Literally pieces of lead will fall out.

I first clean with any gun cleaning solvent I have at the time then use a strip of the Birchwood Lead cleaning cloth. Stuff works great. Once heavily leaded a 45/70 bore and had to use the brass Brillo pad an the lead remover cloth as well of a lot of elbow grease.

Found the real deal on Amazon, there was nothing at the CT or Home Depot.
Also read about a vinegar and peroxide solution that is supposed to work well.

You won't find blue ointment in any pharmacy. I bought some in the sixties and it wasn't for crab lice.
I never saw any after graduating pharmacy school in 74.

Last time I heard reference to "blue ointment it certainly wasn't for lead...altho it was recommended to clean a "dirty ol' bore"...nasty... LOL

Known as "Blue unction" in the UK. Reminded me of a story in one of Spike Milligan's hysterical war memoirs where a soldier went into the chemists and quietly asked for some. The bloke behind the counter said, in a voice that could be heard right down the High Street, "WHAT DO YOU WANT BLUE UNCTION FOR?" to which the soldier replied, even louder, "BECAUSE I'VE GOT BLOODY CRABS!" Those books ("Hitler, My Part in His Downfall" etc.), are a hoot. I remember being bent double with laughter when I read the first one.

Wipe out foaming bore cleaner is amazing and you don't need to worry about the bore being damaged from vigourous brushing.

not the safest thing in the world but mercury works amazing! I clean the barrel and "rough up" the lead then plug the muzzle. I typically fill the barrel 1/3 to 1/2 full of mercury and rock it back and forth to ensure it coats the lead. The remainder goes back into the bottle of mercury. After letting it sit for 10-15 minutes, run a very tight fitting patch down the bore and oil it up. 90% of the time it removes every spec of lead in one treatment. 100% of the time, after two treatments there will be zero lead left.
