I'm looking for a good gunsmith to modify my 10/22 factory stainless takedown barrel.

Shorten to 16.5", thread 1/2-28 & front sight reinstalled.

I've seen it done by gunsmiths in the USA, they bore a diameter inside the front sight base and reinstall ( shrink/press-fit ) further back on the barrel.

I want to keep the factory barrel and sights.

I already asked Dlask and he was not interested of doing this job...

Anyone know a good guns that can do this work ?

EDIT :

Its not legal to modify barrel length in Canada.

I found one ( factory 16.5 inch threaded TD barrel ) in Canada. Thanks folks !

Might be a lot cheaper to buy the barrel you want and swap it out yourself. I've heard stories about the barrels being hard to get out but mine came out without any special tools.

Would not cutting the barrel create a prohibited firearm?

My factory barrel is 18.5" long and they sell the 16.5" threaded version from the factory.

They just don't make 16.5" in stainless...

There is also a couple rimfire rifles tat come from factory with 16.5" barrel, like the Savage MK2 FV-SR...

Its a Takedown model ;)

Cutting your factory 18.5" factory barrel to 16.5" would create a prohibited firearm.
You can rebarrel it, but not chop it.

You are correct but the 16.5" barrel is a factory produced barrel. Cutting your barrel to that length would make it prohibited.

By any chance did Dlask explain why they didn't want to take on your project? Probably has something to do with them not wanting to get themselves into trouble...

Nope...

But that doesn't make sense to me...

If I buy an aftermarket 16.5" barrel, I'm good but to modify a factory barrel to the same specs, it will be prohibited... ???

Ruger also produce a 16.5" threaded stainless takedown version but its an Davidson's distributor exclusive and to my knowledge, its not availabl in Canada.

Yup. You can rebarrel, but you cannot cut your factory barrel to less than 18".
If you rebarrel, the only length that matters is overall, which must exceed 26". This is why Dlask and others offer short barrels, but won't cut yours.

The law was intended to penalize sawed off shotguns and rifles. The way it was worded, this is what it does - goes after sawed off long arms.
What was not addressed were factory original shortguns, with 10, 12, 14, etc. inch original barrels.

Get a short barrel, and have it threaded and a sight mounted.

Your first mistake is trying to make sense of our laws.... once you stop trying to make sense of them everything will start making sense...

Anyways it's something to do with stopping gang bangers from cutting barrels down... because they always obey laws and all that lol...

But on a serious note your going to have to buy a new barrel if you want it any shorter.

So if I find one from the States, I'm good but I can't do one with the exact dimensions

I was in the same boat as you a couple of years back. I had to have the 16.5" factory threaded barrel so put out a WTB ad in the EE and when I got the 16.5" one I sold my 18.5" and didn't lose much.

The 16.5" SS Takedown with mossy Oak stocks was absolutely a regular catalogued item from Ruger a few years back and many made it into canada. I suggest a WTB ad in the rimfire section. Good Luck.

yes it would. it needs to be factory made at 16.5". cant cut it down below 18.5"

To the OP. These are Canadian gun laws. they don't make sense. If you want a 16.5" barrel you need to buy one that length from the factory.

Ordering one from the states is going to be difficult. Barrels are controlled goods and need an export permit/import permit filled out for them.

Found one in Canada.

I would have been able to import one because I have an IIC ( international import certificate ).

But it was much less pain to find one in Canada.

I'm glad you found one! I notice a difference in handling between the 16.5" and 18" and would choose the shorter barrel everytime.
