Can't pick I like them all. I would probably starve to death agonizing between the 12 and 20 if I did have to choose just one. I know split the difference with a 16, if there were decent steel options I might but unfortunately there are not.

Agree on the 16ga steel. I have been waiting for years for sam1 to put out a 16ga steel wad for reloading which they say they were and what happens they release one for 28ga lately
That I cannot understand
Cheers

I'm a bit younger than most here and (feel like I) naturally use 12g for everything (though I have an old 20g that I love to pull out every now and then, and might get a 20g semi for upland soon) - the variety of shells seems to make the gauge all-purpose.

I've never shot a 16g but I'm interested in the perspectives of people voting for it - is it the best of both worlds between 12/20? What are the shell costs comparable to? What shells are you using for, say, upland, or ducks, or geese? Just wondering if anybody swears by it over 12g! Haha

Hey me too. I thought I was the only fool that did that LOL
Wingmaster with a full choke barrel :)

Try it with a 410 with 11/16 loads not easy but doable if you get them right out of the house not great scores but reasonably ok. My vote went for the 10 gauge it's performances is a amazing much more so in the pre steel days . Also hand loading the 10 is fun and testing them on clay targets is a hoot .

16, I own three. Citori and two of the old "true" Sweet Sixteen Auto 5's. They go from geese to clays and everything in between.

LOl. Have never tried or seen anyone with a 410 on trap. Talk about getting on them quick :)
Yep I love the 10ga also been using one and reloading it since about 78. Still do all the steel loads for it and buckshot
Kept four, 2 golds, sp-10 and an ithaca mag 10
Cheers

The old farm boys would tout if want to kill something bring a 12 gauge. Times have changed for sure as has the equipment and shells mostly for the better.

I found Trebor’s comment interesting. Would the poll numbers change if you had to pick one ?

I am not offended either way. I am positive, as I get older, I am getting dumber.

The original post stated if you had to pick one. Not sure why so many people are picking one for every type of hunting situation they do. To me, picking one meant picking only one. But maybe Im getting dumber with age as well LOL

I guess I should have explained myself better in my post. Trevor mentioned if he could only have one he would chose a 12. My understanding is the OP was asking for a favourite gauge vs. you can only have one. For me it is not a tough decision. A 12 covers both options.
