Dont look at weatherby ammo..some costly PEW.PEW.
There was a time I paid $5.00 a round for 257 Wby.

Ammo prices are highly variable and seasonal. You have to be prepared to stock up when prices are low. When inflation and the low state of our Canadian dollar are taken into account, the readily available cartridges are not expensive. Canada is a puny market with poor buying power in the ammunition supply chain.
If you are going to shoot an exotic cartridge, expect exotic prices - and don't expect to find cartridges in every local hardware store. It's always been that way.

Normally and universally, reloading is a money saver. Having said that, I was just on Western Metal's site and they want $17.00 for a bag of 50 military 7.62 X 51/308 brass. Used. I haven't looked for a while and wasn't quite ready for that.

There is a Walmart in my part of the city that every once in a while blows out some of its ammo cheap for some reason. Maybe new stock coming in so the old stock needs to be moved out the door? I've stocked up on some .410 when its at $9/box.
This summer they had 30-06 on for $15/box so I grabbed a couple as I needed some for a single-shot H&R I just picked up. To make the deal even better there was a mail in rebate from Federal I think and I got back a rebate cheque for $5 US per box.

Try 338 Lapua in an area where only 3 or 4 rifles exist. Only one local store stocks it at $129 a box of 20 plus tax. That is for PPU which is about the lowest quality. I will reload, however, hazmat fees makes it expensive just ordering components!
Outside of 22lr, 9mm, 223, 7.62x39 and 308 the price is going to be expensive. Even the listed ones can be expensive if you don't know where to look. All other calibers will be worth your time to reload, some more than others. I got into reloading because of the cost. When 303 went over 23 bucks a box I figured it was time that I learned how to reload
the price of ammo has gone up a fair amount over the years and that is the reason I started reloading many years ago and cast my own stuff to cut costs down. if you look at the ee ads for once fired brass the prices are out of this world and not worth buying as it is cheaper to buy loaded ammo and shoot it to get the brass. 303 , 8mm and a few other shells have nutty prices on them.
I find fmj can be cheap for common Calibres, but softpoint hunting bullets are significantly more expensive as a rule. Primers as still cheap, especially on sale. Powder is still expensive at the best of times, but sometimes on sale for a decent % off if you pick it up in person.
I’m considering no longer loading for my 30-06, since when they’re on sale and also have a factory rebate it’s barely worth the time. 308win still has savings to be made, as it uses quite of bit less powder.
To do it all over again, I would buy the cheapest on sale ammo with factory rebate, and if I want accuracy then use my reloading kit to ensure the same overall case length and powder charge of each round. Not much price difference, but new brass doesn’t require work, and making it more precise/consistent is fast and easy at that point.
I will still load 308 as it’s still worth it. It’s still worth it for 223, especially if you want to tailor your own load or buy bulk. I hope to get myself one when I can afford to - and the supplies to reload it.
