I'm having a Ron Smith barrel made with a 1-10 "left" twist for a 30 cal. I was advised by my gun maker that the left twist corrects right hand shooters from pulling and shooting to the right. Has anyone heard of this or any other reason for the left twist?
 
In the old days (late 1800's to early 1900's ) offhand target rifles were often made with a left hand twist so that the rifle would torque into the shooters cheek which allegedly made things more consistent. One of the top barrel makers of this era was Harry Pope and he was a big believer of this idea from what I understand.

I'm a lefty and shoot right hand twist rifles so I guess I get the same advantage :).

This is exactly why Ron Smith is making left and right twist rifling, that the rear stock/cheek rest would torque onto the shooters cheek. It's said that right and left hand shooters mostly pull their shot, resulting in a group either to the left or right of POI. Left twist for right had shooter, right twist for left hand shooters counteracts this issue.
 
Interesting enough, I met David Tubbs at Phoenix just a few years back - he was switching between left or right twist barrels on his Tubb 2000 based upon the dominant wind direction. Might have had something to do with spin drift.
 
what you need in a barrel twist can depend on a lot of factors .. diameter ... velocity ... bullet length ... what type of bullet you want to shoot

My last 30 cal barrel was done in a 13 twist x 4 r

Interesting ! Who is your gun maker ? and what does Ron Smith the barrel maker say ? is he in agreement with your Gun Smith ? RJ
 
Ron rebored a nice M70 to 458 Lott for me a few years back. Left twist. The recoil is severe enough that I really don't notice which direction it's coming from, other than to the back. But it shoots well. And he is a great guy and barrel maker. So I am happy.
 
Ron's barrels are top notch. I have a few match rifles with his barrels and they work very well. Ron is also a competitive shooter and it's definitely worth listening to what he advises!
