22 elr

We have a plate that we can shoot at from 490 yards, but we move up on it to 372 to get around the trees. We hit it easy with center fire from 490 but the 22 has such a high arc, we cant hit it from the bench with the trees.

It's surprising really how frequently we make hits from 372.

Aside from a decent rifle and select choice of ammo, I would say the most important thing you need for ELR with a 22 is great glass. If you cant read the mirage, you will struggle. These days that pretty much means a $3000 scope or something 30 years old that sold for $1000 when new.

Forgive me for asking silly questions, two things.

1. How would I know I got a "Hit"? I've made hits at 200M and got a tiny "ping" on steel, at 300M I got a VERY quiet "ding". And that's with no one else firing a shot within 100M of me. I find myself shooting into the snow just so I can see a puff kick up. Sounds to me like you guys shoot well beyond 300M, I can't imagine how anyone can hear the hits. Do you guys use paper and/or paint up the targets every time?
2. Subsonic or supersonic ammo? All my guns group better with subsonic, but the bullet drop is insane. My apps shows around 2ft of extra drop at 300M sub vs. supersonic.

Thanks.

Best way might be to use a spotter and watch for swirl, or maybe a bullseye cam. I am not sure how spotting is after 400y, but we can watch 22lr go the distance if you can pick it up early enough (125-150 is where I typically find it on its arc up) . The distortion of the light/air is not as clear as with centerfire that’s for sure. The fresh paint helps too. Sometime I can hear with my walker electronic muffs.

The earmuffs are a good idea, amplified ding. At 250 and 300 yards, with a spotting scope and paint every time, cane hear and see it. I'm going to try some thinner steel at 300. See if it's got more ring to it

Something that works really well for hearing the ding is old fire bells. If you have a local fire protection company that supplies extinguisher recharging and set up of fire alarms they usually have lots of old ones. Locally I have a customer that gives me a few every couple of months. Good ringing sound.View attachment 356019

Wouldn’t a nightforce shv be plenty good for this? Thinking of putting on my V22 rimfire for longer range stuff

You can certainly use that NF scope... just shim the set up like crazy. One of the biggest hurdles with ELR shooting in any format is adjusting for the massive amounts of drop.

new scopes like the Athlon Midas TAC and Ares ETR with 34mm tubes come with 32mils of travel and reticles that have another 19mils. Shimmed a whole bunch, you have the working elevation to make the very long trips easier and avoid kentucky hold overs.

Waiting for the snow to melt....

Expensive route... target flashers. Can offer the Magnetospeed target flasher if interested. They flash a really bright light and no problem to pick up a gentle hit from a rimfire on a steel gong.

"Dirt cheap" method.... find a clear patch of sand, or dusty bank. Put a target sized ring on the dirt... easy to spot hits and misses.

At 500m, I would not expect to hear any sound....

I see. The target flasher is not a bad "investment", sometimes I can't hear my hits at 500M+ with my 6.5CM.
Shooting 22LR at 500M...I'm honestly afraid I'll hit someone else's paper target!

Btw you guys running sub or supersonic ammo?

Subsonic ammo, you need the best performing ammo you can afford for your gun. I’m going to try the gong joe targets out if I am alone or with just one other shooter. At 300 you can hear them like you are beside it, going to use the 2/3 ipsc and paint a 12 inch square for now and make attempts on the 1/3 ipsc or 12 inch circle till spring
