Not enough neck tension?

Hi,

I reload for many calibers but have a problem with 7mm Rem mag Lee dies.

The bullet can be hand rotated after seated. Since it's a RGB kit there's no factory crimp. I need a better neck tension for hunting.

I tried with many bullets; Win pp, TSX, Nosler BT and Sierra. Same results.

What can i do? Maybe the decaping/sizing shaft is a little too big?

you may have one or two problems.
1- your brass may be work hardened from to many reloads and needs to be reanealed.
2- your expander ball may be slightly oversize, but if you weren't haveing problems with your reloads on the same brass before, I would go with #1
 
Hi,

The brass is new.

I lightly sanded/polished the expander ball then resized some brass.

Will seat bullets tonight. Hope it will be OK.

Yes, it sometimes works. Making the expander button smaller is a more permanent solution, usually.

Also, if you have another 7,mm button, you coudl try that.
 
LOL I know all about neck tension, after driving 2 hours to a friends range to find and off deer hunting the next day, all my bullets fallen into the case sitting on the powder LOL!

Or worse yet necked sized some 270 loads deadly accurate! just on th elands, to be in a tree stand and pull the bolt back and have the case pour powder all over and now a stuck bullet on the and come face to face with a deer on your way out LOL!!

Really no impact on a target shooter just my own stupidity i would share.

If you seated your 270 bullets just to the lands, they must have been seated with very little tension, to pull out on opening the bolt. Most of my dies are RCBS, with some Pacific and C-H and I have never had a problem of opening up the neck too much in any calibre I have used. I once had a set of Herters dies, but quickly took them back as unsatisfactory, for another reason, but I have never used Lee dies, except the portable, "pound them out" type.
In hunting loads a person has to be careful not to seat them too tight in the lands, or they may pull out and "spill the beans," as you say happened to you.

You bet I did and a little to close to the lands LOL!
It was deadly accurate!
Those were many years back and many guns before.
ya make mistakes trials and errors and those days I was trying to get everything accuracy wise out of the rifle no matter what application, and I learned quick that the 1/2 extra accuracy was not worth the head aches

That was going to be my suggestion also, thought you shouldn't HAVE to crimp. .001" should be enough tension to hold the bullets in place, unless the recoil is so stout as to shift them via inertia...
 
"...need a better neck tension for hunting..." You need neck tension, period. You have none. Sounds like the neck isn't being resized. How is the sizing die set up? It should just kiss the shell holder with the ram all the way up.
"...just on the lands..." They're supposed to be just off the lands, not on them.
 
Take the decapper-expander rod out of the die. Run a lubed case into the stripped die. Now try seating a bullet in the case. If it is still loose send the die back to Lee as the neck portion was cut over-sized.

The expander ball was definately too big. I mesured and was really close to 0.2835

I seated my TSX's and NP with desired neck tension.

I just put the expander shaft in my drill chuck and sanded a little with a 600 and 1200 wet paper and bingo.

Did not want to buy the factory crimp. I have it for 243, 6.5 and 06 and not much use it.

I know, but i put ammo in mag only for hunting. Recoil is tough on loose bullets. I agree, even for range, the neck tension was probably not enough.

The die was a full 1/2 turn past shellholder kiss. That's how i size all other calibers except 303 brit wich is 1 1/2 before SH kiss..

I really need another press. The Lee Challenger is very sprigny for those magnums calibers. I think i'll go with the Classic cast or Classic turret press.
