Just wondering what everyone’s choke preference is for hunting grouse. If you use an o/u or sxs then state both please. Thanks

With 20 and 12 gauge O/U and SXS, I generally use Mod & IC... rarely change from that, but if shots are proving close I will go IC & Skeet... if shots are on the long side, I sometimes go Mod/Mod or IM & Mod. For woodcock I generally use Skeet/Skeet and for pheasant often Mod/Mod.

12g pumps with barrel lengths ranging from 12.5” to 20”, most of them are mod chokes with a full choke in one of them. More importantly is the pattern at specific distances, my full win choke patterns about the same as my mod Rem and tru chokes at the same distances. I’m not concerned with what choke is in my barrel as long as my patterns are how I like them, oddly enough when I’m getting nice birdshot patterns my buckshot and slug poa/poi is where I like it to be as well.

The traditional English game gun choking of Cylinder and tight have worked very well for me in my vintage side by sides. In more modern doubles I prefer the combination of near cylinder or skeet and modified.

Hey guys, I grew up shooting grouse in the head/neck with 22LR. It was just last year I learned you can only legally shoot them with a shot gun.
I can't even imagine using a 20 or 12 gauge. This season I will teach my kids to hunt with the 410 full choke.
QUESTION - how can I continue to use the old Cooey model 39?

Depends on where and time of season for me usually always carrying a win 101 o/u. Up north for dumb bird its whatever 410 i grab be it single, savage 410/22, spanish sxs, or o/u they are all head shots close up.
For the more skidish birds locally its mostly all wing shooting and ill start the season with the 101 12g sk/sk with whatever 7.5 target loads i have handy as they tend to hold tighter in the thicker cover and as the foliage comes down and they bust further out i go to my 101 20 i believe imp mod choked shooting 1oz 7.5 game loads. Early season with the 20 7/8oz 7.5shot target loads.

Obviously you are not grouse hunting in Alberta. Last time I checked you could use a rifle to harvest grouse in Alberta. With a rimfire often the first choice. There could be some zones with stricter rules during big game season. You must be talking about another province?
