Whistlin Will, from Courtney BC, has won Winter Range, the US SASS Championship. He was dominant as he also won the top 16 Shoot Off and the speed pistol, speed rifle and speed double shotgun side matches!

This is a great shot in the arm for all Canadian gun owners, regardless of chosen discipline. It demands national recognition. To top if off, he's a really nice person!

In addition to that title, he won "Last man Standing" at the US Nationals and first place "Speed Rifle" with a time of 1.94 seconds.

Watching "Will" shoot is mind boggling. The kid is a young Jerry Miculek.

There were 20 Canadians at the match. Other winners were:

- "Alberta Annie", 3rd Sr. Lady
- "Prairie Storm", 4th Sr. Lady
- "Donny Two Legs", 5th Cowboy.

That's awesome. How old is this "kid" ?

I believe Will is 18, but maybe 19. Nicest young man I know, always helpful, not full of himself at all. A credit to his parents, he will represent Canada well, the pictures I saw of him at WR he was wearing a shirt with the Maple Leaf.

Let's not forget: Serenity: First place, Classic Cowgirl. A class act, all around. Plus: Victoria Diamond. Second, in Lady Silver Senior. I see quite a few more familiar names. All in all, Canadian cowboy action shooters were very well represented. Congrats to all who participated.

You forgot Southwest Trapper, Alberta Annie & Prairie Storm. Lots of excellent videos linked to facebook including the Top 16 shootoff.

Going over the lists again, I see many Canadian shooters who placed well into the top 20, within their category. That's pretty impressive, when put into perspective. Winter Range regularly draws anywhere between 700 and 1000 competitors, every year. So this speaks volumes about the high calibre of our Canadian SASS competitors. Whistlin' Will's Speed Rifle time of 1.94 seconds, is particularly impressive. I believe the current world record sits at 1.55 seconds. Held by another SASS World Champion: Deuce Stevens. This young man can shoot!

Garand: Nope...I haven't forgotten about those fine folks. They are certainly worthy of recognition, wherever they shoot. Just adding a couple more top names to the list. Looks like my evening will be a busy one. Lots of video to catch up on.

Whistlin' Will putting on a clinic. The young man is fast. But, its in his transitions where he really shines. Smooth and precise, with no wasted motion. The mark of a truly elite competitor. Clearly, Will has invested the time and effort into making it look easy.
It really is a shame...but no real surprise.... that Canadian media hasn't picked up on this win. Winter Range attracts attention from around the world. Except in Canada, eh?

What shooting discipline DOES attract media attention in Canada?

When Vancouver got the Winter Olympics there was an op-ed re: the "militarism" of the Winter Biathlon. I responded by pointing out the military history behind the ALL of the Summer Olympic Games - javelin, archery, fencing, wrestling, marathon, pentathlon, etc.

There was no rebuttal.

I only have one word "WOW"

Will's speed makes it difficult for Spotters to keep track of his hits.

Note also his flawless gun handling and the safe use of X-Draw with no sweeping during the draw or reholstering. It's a matter of training and technique.

There was a time X-Draw was THE standard in IPSC. I still have my Milt Sparks X-Draw for my Gold Cup ''Bowling Pin" gun. I'm not sure why it was banned as I'm not aware of any incidents with X-Draw rigs.
