Good morning,

I may be misunderstanding this, so was hoping someone may be able to set me straight. I own a Leupold AR scope. I liked it so much, Just bought another off the EE. My intentions were to use it on my 7.62 NATO. It comes with .223 Rem, turrets and I assume calibrated for that round? Is it not possible to purchase 308 Win turrets from Leupold and switch them? Or do you have to send the scope in to install them and calibrate the scope? Any idea of cost?

I am relatively new to using scopes and have a basic understanding of use. So not 100% confident on some aspects of the operation.

You may not need to make any changes, ballistics are very close in the two cartridges
Depends on what you are trying to target, and what loads you use

OK, so I read up and watched videos on this extra turret deal.

With my .223 REM turrets, I can just figure out all the stuff and use it with 308 WIN as is? Or I can order ammo specific turrets from Leupold to make it easy? It is my understanding, you order the turrets based on the caliber and bullet type and grain? That would be 308 Win / 7,62 NATO round would be Hertenberger M80 147gr boat tail.

I will be using that until I have sufficient empty casings to reload M118 type match rounds 173gr-168gr. Or as close to that as possible. But that will take a while. So my now numb mind is asking …

Do I purchase just 308 Win 147gr turrets and adjust from that to 173gr when the time comes? Certainly that would have to be closer and easier then adjusting from .233 Rem turrets? Or do I / should I purchase a separate set of turrets for 308 173gr? Or have I misunderstood everything and should hang my head in utter confusion and weep?
 
I would either get the standard non-CDS dial from Korth and not bother with the feature or wait until you are shooting a specific ammo consistently before getting a new turret for it.

Because you will be changing bullet weight, BC, muzzle velocity between your 147's and 168-173 there may be enough difference in ballistics that the dial for one will be different enough from the other as to make it inaccurate.
You could run some only ballistics calculations to check.

To use the 223 dial for 308 you will need to shoot at different ranges and see what the difference is between the numbers on the dial and the numbers you achieve.

For example if the 223 dial is set to 2.5 the expectation is that you are shooting that round (based on whatever type of round of 223 the dial was made for) at 250 yards to hit at 0. If you set the dial to 3.0 then at 300 yards you will have 0 with the the same 223 load. At 2.5 with the 223 dial and 308 round you'd have to shoot at 250 yards and see where the hit was, then write your own dope sheet. Same for all the other dial values. This number on the dial for 223 = this number you have written down for 308. Pain in the butt really.

As you see from the above, calibrated dials will not translate well from one round to another.

Can you get the original standard scale dial from the person you purchased the scope from?

The scopes original turrets are .223 Rem. The scope is a Leupold MK AR 3-9x40.

Anyway, Paul_T, I think you cleared up my confusion. I thought the turrets offered from Leupold, regular and CDS were the same. Didn't realize it was 2 different products. So, it should just be a matter of ordering regular 308 Win specific turrets, right?

Thank you all for your help, I greatly appreciate it. I am looking forward to start shooting with a scope and reloading my own ammunition. It seems to me, a very fun and interesting next chapter in marksmanship.
