The DNA of eastern coyotes (canis latrans var.) is most definitely a genetic soup mix of coyote (canis latrans), wolf (canis lupus, plus subspecies), and the domestic dog. The exact measure of the mix depends on the region of North America, the local fauna, and the time in history, among other things. The same is largely true of North American wolf species (that is, they contain coyote DNA), though probably to a lesser extent. And, of course, if you go back far enough, and perhaps not that far in the scheme of things, there is common ancestry.

That's not the same as saying every eastern coyote is a "coywolf", which generally speaking, is a term of little usefulness and gets thrown around far too much.

It's not theory. It is lab test proven and one just has to see one of our dogs to know they are not the same as those peewee western ones LOL

I work in Cambridge (over 100k population) and see a small pack of 3 coyotes 1-2 times a week often walking down the sidewalks of a densely populated residential area where houses are mere feet apart. Last week I saw 2 of them casually walking on the sidewalk with a rabbit in ones mouth. Dozens of times I have seen their sets of tracks leading in and out of backyards and cruising schoolyards.


I don't think people realize how many coyotes are walking around in cities undetected....

We hear coyotes howling pretty much every night. We're just a bit north of Mississauga.
My wife said she saw two young ones on the road near our house.
